Asensio scored his first hattrick of his Madrid career.
Real Madrid continued their good form with a convincing 6-1 win over Mallorca at Santiago Bernabeu.
Karim Benzema capitalized on an early Mallorca mistake at the Santiago Bernabeu before three goals in five minutes put Madrid 3-1 ahead with two Asensio strikes coming on either side of a goal from Mallorca’s Lee Kang-in. Meanwhile, Asensio completed his hattrick with a curling effort which went to the low bottom corner.
Benzema reached the milestone of 200 La Liga goals with his second goal of the night. He is only the tenth player to do so in the Spanish top flight.
Ancelotti’s side has also scored more goals after six games than any LaLiga team since Barcelona in the 2013-14 season. Meanwhile, Real Madrid has not scored as many goals after six games since the 1987-88 campaign.
Asensio scored his first hattrick for Real Madrid which coincidentally was against his boyhood club Mallorca. Asensio did not celebrate his goals out of respect for Mallorca.
Ancelotti was pleased with Asensio’s performance, saying:
“He did well, putting him in that position indeed is where he can hurt the opposing team, between the lines he has a lot of quality, he shoots well, he combines well with the forwards. He did well and let’s hope he can score three goals next week too.”
Asensio started as one of the midfield three rather than his traditional wide forward slot. Ancelotti talked about Asensio’s new role saying,
“Asensio showed that he can play in this position, it’s a position where he can do a lot of damage, it’s between the lines, it isn’t out wide, getting the ball there with the shot he has is dangerous for the opponents.”
The victory lifts Real Madrid two points clear of Atletico at the top of LaLiga.
