Real Sociedad Secures First Copa del Rey Semifinal Spot with 2-1 Victory Against Celta Vigo

Real Sociedad makes history by becoming the first team to reach the Copa del Rey semifinals with a 2-1 away win against Celta Vigo. Squad rotation decisions by Celta coach Rafael Benitez.

In a historic feat, Real Sociedad became the first team to secure a spot in the Copa del Rey semifinals with a 2-1 victory over Celta Vigo. The gamble of resting key players by Celta coach Rafael Benitez backfired, resulting in a lack of coordination and an advantageous situation for Real Sociedad.

Celta Vigo’s decision to leave regular starters such as Carles Perez, Unai Nunez, Iago Aspas, Oscar Mingueza, and Jorgen Strand Larsen on the bench weakened their side visibly. The vulnerability in Celta’s defense was exploited early on, with Mikel Merino providing a long throw that led to Mikel Oyarzabal’s unmarked header, securing an early 2-minute lead for Real Sociedad.

Despite the setback of losing left-back Kieran Tierney to injury after the half-hour mark, Real Sociedad remained solid in defense and continued to threaten from set pieces. Andre Silva almost doubled the lead just before halftime, showcasing Sociedad’s dominance.

Sheraldo Becker, making his debut for Real Sociedad, added to Celta’s woes by scoring the second goal in the 66th minute. Brais Mendez’s precise pass found Becker, who capitalized on the defensive lapse from Celta to extend the lead.

Celta Vigo attempted a comeback in the 92nd minute as Luca de la Torre scored after a layback from Strand Larsen. However, time constraints prevented Celta from finding an equalizer.

Real Sociedad’s victory highlights the significance of strategic squad management in knockout competitions, as Celta’s squad rotation misstep proved costly. With this triumph, Real Sociedad eagerly awaits the Copa del Rey semifinals.

In upcoming Copa del Rey action, Athletic Bilbao will host FC Barcelona, league leaders Girona will visit Mallorca on Wednesday, and Atletico Madrid will face Sevilla at home on Thursday.
