In recent times, efforts have been made to work on inclusivity within sports despite all the challenges that refugee athletes face, which include citizenship and regulations, lack of resources, and risks of exploitation that are highly possible due to the lack of support and guidance available to them, amongst others.
Who are Refugee Athletes?
Refugee athletes refer to the athletes who have been forced to leave their countries due to reasons of war, violence, and persecution. They are the athletes who are not able to represent their own countries and instead compete as independent athletes that are included in a completely different banner altogether, like the Olympic Refugee Team.

IOC Refugee Olympic Team
IOC Refugee Olympic Team was launched in 2016 for the Rio Games. It enables the elite refugee athletes to compete with the global athletes on a center stage.
Most recently, it participated in the Paris 2024 Olympics and brought awareness to the global refugee crisis.
World Athletics Athlete Refugee Team (ART)
The Olympic Refugee Foundation, in collaboration with the other federations, supports the refugee athletes team that participates in different competitive events.
The World Athletics Athlete Refugee Team (ART) consists of athletes who have faced violence and injustice in their own nations.
It is the only refugee team program that happens year-round.
Refugee Youth Olympic Team
Youth Olympic Games will take place in Dakar, Senegal, in 2026, and the Refugee Youth Olympic Team is going to make its debut there as part of an initiative launched by the International Olympic Committee.
This is one of the initiatives that seeks to promote recognition and inclusion of talent.
Olympic Refugee Foundation (ORF)
The Olympic Refugee Foundation was founded in the year 2017 by the International Olympic Committee.
It is a non-governmental organization whose goals are to support the development of refugee athletes. Through its initiatives, it seeks to lessen the gaps in access to resources.
UNHCR Sports Strategy (2022-2026)
The title for the UNHCR Sports Strategy states ‘More than a Game’, which means that it is not merely about sports but also carries aspects of inclusion and social empowerment. The core idea behind the first global sports strategy launched by the UNHCR is mainly towards community building.
