Washington Freedom has appointed Ricky Ponting, the former Australian captain and current head coach of Delhi Capitals, as their new head coach. This move follows the recent appointment of Dhiraj Malhotra as the franchise’s first CEO, marking the revival of their longstanding working relationship spanning half a decade. Ponting takes over from veteran Australian coach Greg Shipperd and will collaborate with one-time fierce rival Dale Steyn, along with fellow countrymen Michael Klinger and Burt Cockley, who join the support staff.
Ponting expressed his enthusiasm about the new role: “I’m extremely excited to be joining the Washington Freedom in 2024. Cricket is gaining momentum in the US, and I’m eager to contribute to Major League Cricket. The commitment of everyone at Washington Freedom has impressed me. While it feels a bit surreal to replace my friend Greg Shipperd, there’s perhaps no one better to establish a successful franchise. I’m prepared to build on his foundation as we approach the upcoming season.”

Govil announced with immense pride and anticipation the appointment of Ricky Ponting as the head coach, citing Ponting’s legendary status, leadership qualities, winning mindset, and commitment to nurturing talent as qualities that align perfectly with the franchise’s goals. Ponting’s understanding of the vision to enhance the sport’s profile in the US and develop local talent resonates with the team’s mission.
Adding Ponting further strengthens the Australian influence on the emerging franchise following the strategic alliance between Freedom and Cricket NSW. By the agreement, Freedom sent their American-based players, including Andries Gous and Jacobus Pienaar, to Sydney in January for training within the Cricket NSW ecosystem.
