During a match between Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2026 at New Chandigarh, Riyan Parag (Rajasthan Royals Captain) was found vaping in their dressing room, this is against league regulations and photographs were also then posted online.
Official Action by BCCI On Riyan Parag
Riyan Parag was found guilty of infringing upon Article 2.21 of the IPL Code of Conduct by the Board of Control for Cricket in India due to significant misconduct toward the game. As a result He has been fined 25% of his match fee
One demerit point has been added to his record
Without appealing their decision, Parag accepted both the violation and penalties imposed by referee Amit Sharma.
IPLs Reputation on the Line
The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) is taking this situation very seriously and has stated that, “We are exploring further options to enforce more robust sanctions.” The BCCI has reiterated that they will maintain the integrity of the IPL and its reputation, which leaves the possibility of additional disciplinary action against the player and/or team officials.
Match Context: RR vs PBKS Thriller
Although the controversy has been created by several parties, Rajasthan Royals were able to complete an exciting run chase of 222 runs with four balls remaining. Unfortunately, within minutes of the game finishing, the focus shifted from their performance on the field to Riyan Parag’s breach of discipline.
Previous Incident Involving RR Management
The Rajasthan Royals have received multiple disciplinary penalties this season. This is the second incident where Romi Bhinder, the team manager, was penalized for bringing his mobile phone into the dugout during a match against Royal Challengers Bangalore. This was deemed a violation of Article 4.1.1 of IPL’s Anti- Corruption Protocol.
Later on, Bhinder said he made an error by approaching it incorrectly and provided an unqualified unconditional apology. In addition, he was warned about compliance with respect to the next incident involving Riyan Parag or Romi Bhinder by following all guidelines issued to him in that respect.
Concerns raised over social media publicity
The aforementioned incidents were made public via social media. As a result of this type of publicity, there are now concerns about discipline, awareness and adherence to IPL regulations in team environments.
The Riyan Parag vaping incident demonstrates that off-field behaviour can negatively affect both a sportsperson’s reputation and the image of the sport itself, in this case cricket.
Therefore with the BCCI planning to impose new and tougher sanctions for violations, there will likely be increased scrutiny on IPL teams and their players in the future.
