Roman Reigns has been walking the line between good and bad since his return at SummerSlam last year. After losing to Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania XL, The Tribal Chief didn’t fully embrace his old villainous ways. But recent events suggest that may soon change.
Reigns has a major match at WrestleMania 41, where he will face Seth Rollins and CM Punk in a Triple Threat match. What’s interesting is that none of these superstars are currently playing the role of a clear villain. Punk is a fan favorite, while Rollins balances between both sides. However, as the feud builds up, subtle hints suggest that Roman Reigns could once again become the dominant heel in WWE.
Let’s take a look at three key signs that indicate The Tribal Chief is heading back to the dark side.
1. Roman Reigns’ Reaction to CM Punk’s WrestleMania 41 Main Event Spot
During last week’s SmackDown, a contract signing confirmed that the Triple Threat Match will be the main event on Night One of WrestleMania 41. CM Punk and Paul Heyman were clearly emotional about the moment, but Reigns had a very different response.
Instead of celebrating or even acknowledging Punk’s achievement, Reigns demanded that Punk thank him. He claimed that without him, Punk would never have made it to the WrestleMania main event. Not only did he mock The Second City Saint, but his arrogance in the moment felt like a callback to his heel persona. This attitude could be the beginning of his return to his ruthless, villainous ways.
2. Paul Heyman’s Loyalty Is Becoming a Concern
For months, fans have noticed that Paul Heyman has not been as devoted to Roman Reigns as before. Since Survivor Series: WarGames last year, Heyman’s interactions with CM Punk have been noticeably warmer. He has shown respect and even admiration for Punk in recent appearances.
This shift in loyalty might not sit well with Reigns. The Tribal Chief has always valued loyalty above all else. If he senses that Heyman is drifting away, it could push him further into paranoia, making him more aggressive and dangerous. A desperate Reigns, feeling betrayed, could unleash his heel instincts once again.
3. WWE Needs Another Top Heel
Right now, WWE has some strong villains, but none quite as dominant as Reigns was during his peak. John Cena, who is currently WWE’s biggest heel, isn’t a full-time performer. That leaves a gap in the roster that only a superstar of Reigns’ caliber can fill.
While Reigns does not appear on every episode of RAW or SmackDown, WWE could benefit from him stepping back into the heel role more frequently. His previous run as a villain was one of the best in recent years, and the character seemed to come naturally to him. Bringing back that version of Reigns could make WWE’s storylines even more compelling.
