Deshabandu Sanath Teran Jayasuriya (born 30 June 1969) is a former captain of Sri Lankan cricket. With his exponential batting with Romesh Kaluwitharana in the mid-1990s, he is credited with revolutionising one-day international cricket, ushering in the tough modern-day batting strategic approach of all nations. 

Jayasuriya, widely regarded as one of the biggest assaulting batsmen of all time, is well recognised for his potent striking and match-winning all-round appearances across all formats of the game. Jayasuriya was an all-rounder with an international career that spanned 2 decades. He is the only player in One Day International cricket history to have scored over 10,000 runs and taken over 300 wickets. He is also recognised as one of the best all-rounders in the antiquity of limited-overs cricket.

He was designated the 1996 Cricket World Cup’s Most Valuable Player, and Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack ended up breaking an age-old tradition by labelling him one of the Five Cricketers of the Year 1997 despite not playing in England the previous season. From 1999 to 2003, Jayasuriya captained the Sri Lankan cricket team. He is affectionately referred to as the Master Blaster.

He was also a crucial player on the team that managed to win the 1996 Cricket World Cup and played in the finals of the 2007 Cricket World Cup and the 2009 ICC World Twenty20. In December 2007, he announced his retirement from Test cricket, and in June 2011, he announced his retirement from limited-overs cricket. Sri Lanka Cricket hired him as chairman of the cricket selection committee on January 28, 2013. During his stint as chief selector, Sri Lanka won the ICC World Twenty20 for the first time.

  1. Sanath Jayasuriya is the only cricketer in historical record to have both scored 10,000 runs and taken 300 wickets in a single format.
  2. He is the first international cricketer to achieve a century in under 50 balls. In 1996, he managed to score a One Day International century in 48 balls against Pakistan.
  3. Sanath Jayasuriya has been the most viable left-arm spinner in One Day International antiquity. He took 323 wickets at an average of 36.75 in his career, which include 12 four-wicket hauls.
  4. Jayasuriya has the greatest ODI innings score by a Sri Lankan. In 2000, he scored 189 runs against India in Sharjah. Jayasuriya’s innings attributed for 64% of the Sri Lankan total (299) and 54% of the total runs scored in the match (353). The Indians were all out for 54 runs, resulting in Jayasuriya outperforming the opposition team by 135 runs.

  1. In 1988, Jayasuriya was named ‘Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year’ in the Outstation Division. In the same year, he was named ‘Best Batsman’ and ‘Best All-rounder’ in the Outstation Segment at the Observer School Cricket Awards ceremony.
  2. Jayasuriya illustrated Sri Lanka in the first ever ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Australia in 1988, and was later selected for a tour to Pakistan with the Sri Lanka ‘B’ team, where he scored two undefeated double centuries. Soon after, he was formulated into the national team for the 1989-90 tour to Australia.
  3. He holds the world record for the second fastest ODI fifty, which he scored against Pakistan in 1996 off just 17 balls. Jayasuriya’s record stood for about 19 years before De Villiers broke it on January 18, 2015.
  4. Interestingly, Jayasuriya decided to participate in Indian dance reality show “Jhalak Dikhlajaa”. He was out on duck 34 times, with 10 of them being Golden Ducks.
