Sarah Jane Taylor established the benchmark for wicketkeepers – both male and female – in the 2010s, often going viral thanks to her lightning-fast glovework, with leg-side stumpings soon becoming her signature.
Taylor played significant roles in some of England Women’s most illustrious victories over the course of her career, including the World Cup and World T20 double in 2009 and the unforgettable home World Cup win in 2017, where she produced crucial innings of 54 and 45 in England’s victories over South Africa and India in the semi-final and final, respectively. However, it was her keeping that distinguished her. In 2018, Adam Gilchrist declared, “She is the best wicketkeeper in the world right now, male or female.”
One of the most naturally gifted players England has ever produced, Sarah Taylor made her debut in 2006 with a run-a-ball 61 against India in her fourth ODI. Early the following year, in Chennai, she scored her first century against Australia.
She withdrew from the Ashes series in the summer of 2019 and later confirmed her retirement from international cricket. She was scheduled to return for Welsh Fire in the Hundred’s debut season in 2021.
