The President of Italy’s third-level soccer association has condemned “elitist” plans to change the organization of the Coppa Italia to close out clubs underneath the best two divisions.

The clubs from the top-level Serie A met on Wednesday and consented to limit the number of participating teams to 40, from only the top 2 leagues from next season.

The Copa Italia competition is controlled and organized by Serie A.

“The choice of Serie A to bar Lega Pro groups from the Coppa Italia abuses basic rights as well as is an outflow of an elitist idea of football, unequipped for having a dream for the entire framework,” Lega Pro president Francesco Ghirelli said in a proclamation.
