The Indian Premier League (IPL) issued an official statement addressing the fine, confirming the reason behind the penalty:

This fine was levied under the terms of Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which addresses offenses relating to slow over rates specifically.
The Incident That Led to the Fine
The slow over rate penalty was a result of an event that took place during the 19th over of Delhi Capitals’ innings. As soon as Ishant Sharma’s over was completed, he started walking off the field as a result of the extreme heat. This halt in proceedings led to a confrontation between Shubman Gill and the on-field umpire.
Shubman Gill’s Clash with the Umpire
When Ishant Sharma departed the field, the umpire ordered Shubman Gill to bring on an extra player inside the 30-yard circle as compensation for the slow over rate. But Shubman Gill conveyed his protestation, saying Ishant had finished his over already, and there would be a time taken to get the impact player into the field. He thought that no penalty should be given for the delay in the change.
Despite Gill’s objections, the umpire insisted that Ishant’s departure from the field was deliberate, which caused the delay in the game and consequently led to the slow over rate violation.

Though the fine was a personal setback for Shubman Gill, his team’s win over Delhi Capitals is still a big win. Gujarat Titans, under Gill’s leadership, displayed great resilience and coordination in chasing down an intimidating score.
