The SL vs BAN 1st ODI saw a stunning reversal of fortune with Bangladesh going from the top to a stunning collapse, giving Sri Lanka a stunning victory.
Taskin Ahmed, Bangladesh’s leader of fast bowling, spoke about what went wrong in the game, citing panic and momentum change as the turning points. Srilanka secured 77 77-run victory with Charith Asalanka being the player of the match for his 106-run knock in 123 balls.
A Good Beginning Turns Awful for Bangladesh

Pursuing a total of 245, Bangladesh seemed well set for an easy victory. Tanzid Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto had guided the side to 96 for 1 in only 16 overs, laying a good foundation for a win.
“I was hoping we would win with five to seven overs remaining,” Taskin said after the match, even as the team was full of confidence at the start of the run-chase.
The Collapse: 7 Wickets in 5 Runs

But the game took a complete U-turn when Najmul Hossain Shanto was run out in the 17th over, courtesy sharp fielding by debutante Milan Rathnayake. The next over witnessed Wanindu Hasaranga getting rid of Litton Das and Tanzid Hasan, turning the game decisively in Sri Lanka’s direction.
“Those two wickets in one over were the turning point,” Taskin conceded. Bangladesh, having been 100 for 2, went to 105 for 8, losing seven wickets for a mere five runs, a collapse that proved to be their undoing.
Taskin: “We Panicked a Bit”
Taskin Ahmed cited the mental aspect of the game as the main reason behind the collapse.
“We were a little casual after the good beginning. Then that run-out took place, and one of our designated batters, Tanzid, was dismissed. Then we panicked a little bit. We didn’t play our natural game, and being under pressure, we broke down,” he elaborated.
He also underscored that the pitch was not the issue:
“Watching two or three guys play well, it didn’t strike us that the wicket was that terrible. That was our failure.“
Jaker Ali’s Fighting Fifty Provides Rays of Hope in Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh

Among the rare positives for Bangladesh in SL vs BAN 1st ODI was Jaker Ali, who played a determined 51 off 64 balls, trying to anchor the innings after the collapse.
“When Jaker got set, he was playing very well. If we had two or three batters remaining to back him up, we could have won the game,” Taskin introspected.
What Went Wrong for Bangladesh?
Despite a strong start in the SL vs BAN 1st ODI, Bangladesh lost due to:
- A key run-out of a settled batter
- A double-wicket over by Hasaranga
- Mental lapses resulting in panic under pressure
- Poor shot choice in the middle overs
Lessons Ahead for Bangladesh
Although Bangladesh was ahead of the game at the beginning, they crashed under the pressure due to their lack of composure. Taskin Ahmed’s straightforward analysis of the team’s performance makes it clear that composure, focus, and correct execution are critical to success in sporting contexts, and the need for intelligent cricket should become clearer now that they have achieved a good start.
