In a pulsating SL vs ZIM decider, Kamil Mishara left an impressive imprint with his first T20I half-century, which helped secure progress for Sri Lanka to a decisive 8-wicket victory over Zimbabwe.

His 73* from 43 balls helped settle a winning chase of 192 and help Sri Lanka take the T20I series 2-1. He formed an unbeaten partnership of 117 runs with a back-in-action Kusal Perera for the third wicket. The pair secured victory with 14 overs remaining.

Zimbabwe’s Impressive Total Led by Marumani

Batting first, Zimbabwe scored a daunting 191/8, the highest number they have posted against Sri Lanka and their third-highest at the Harare Sports Club.  Tadiwanashe Marumani finished with his fourth T20I fifty to lead the attack, with support from other batters in the lineup.

Zimbabwe looked set to cross 200 at one stage, but a disciplined death-bowling effort from Dushmantha Chameera and Matheesha Pathirana pulled things back for Sri Lanka.

Powerplay Battle: SL vs ZIM Openers Shine

Right from the powerplay, both teams started to blaze through their batting. Zimbabwe finished 59/1 with Marumani absorbing, and Bennett and Williams aggressive. Sri Lanka managed to outdo that with an explosive start of 67/1, with Kusal Mendis (30 off 17) and Pathum Nissanka (30 off 20). That strong start gave Sri Lanka the momentum needed to really take-charge of their chase.

Kamil Mishara Makes an Impression

Up to this series, Mishara was an unknown quantity, having only had a brief stint in 2022. But in this SL vs ZIM battle, the left-hander made his mark. Taking the field late during the powerplay, he was mature and composed, particularly after both the openers were sent back in rapid succession.

What caught the eye was his strike rate and calmness. Boundaries were hit when necessary, like a stately six down the ground, but what impressed was his skill at keeping the scoreboard moving. His 117-run partnership with Kusal Perera, who had been in a slump, was a match-winning tie that showed his potential as a solid middle-order batsman.

Perera’s Return to Form

Dropped for the second T20I, Kusal Perera was more assured in this game. Subdued in the early stages, he came into his innings with Mishara. With guileful placement and measured aggression, he made the perfect foil for the younger batter, remaining unbeaten and playing a crucial part in the run-chase.

Hemantha, Chameera, and Pathirana Deter Zimbabwe Late

Despite Zimbabwe’s flying start, Sri Lanka pulled things back expertly in the death overs. Dushan Hemantha removed key players Marumani, Williams, and Raza finishing with 3 wickets.

A stunning final phase to Zimbabwe’s innings featuring Chameera and Pathirana, with Zimbabwe scoring just 38 runs in the last four overs and losing four wickets. Pathirana’s final over was outstanding, only giving up six runs and taking two important wickets, the second being a run-out, that were important in ensuring that Zimbabwe did not reach 200.

Sri Lanka Win SL vs ZIM T20I Series 2-1

The SL vs ZIM T20I series saw exciting cricket, but it was Sri Lanka’s calm and clinical performance in the series clincher that stole the show. Kamil Mishara’s coming-of-age innings, complemented by Kusal Perera’s know-how, and Sri Lanka’s tight death bowling proved to be the difference.

As Sri Lanka sets its sights on the future, Mishara’s batting brings hope and dependability in the middle order – a place they’ve been having trouble filling for long. Zimbabwe, though losing the game, can derive encouragement from their free-scoring and team-centric batting performance.
