American professional boxer Charles L. “Sonny” Liston competed from 1953 to 1970. He was born around 1930 and passed away on December 30, 1970. He beat Floyd Patterson in the first round to win the championship and then repeated the same the following year to defend it. In the latter bout, he also became the first WBC heavyweight champion. He was a dominant contender of his time. Particularly well-known for his great strength, powerful jab, long reach, toughness, and notoriously menacing demeanor, Liston was a fighter.

Although Muhammad Ali (then known as Cassius Clay) entered the fight as a 7-1 underdog, Liston, who was widely regarded as invincible, ultimately defeated Ali to win the title in 1964. As a result of an injured shoulder, Liston withdrew in his corner.
