Former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly was not happy with Shreyas Iyer being left out of the upcoming Test series against England. Shreyas Iyer has been in great form over the past year and was the top run-scorer for Punjab Kings in the IPL 2025.
With Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma missing from the squad, many thought Shreyas would be a strong choice for the middle-order. However, Shreyas Iyer was not included in the final team. Ganguly said that Shreyas deserved a place in the squad and shouldn’t have been the one left out.
“He has been playing at his best in the last year, and should have been in this team. The last year has been fantastic for him. He isn’t the player who got left out. He is now scoring under pressure, taking responsibility, and playing the short ball well. Although Test cricket’s different, I would have had him in this series to see what he can do,” Ganguly told RevSportz.
The former BCCI president has seen Iyer’s progress closely during his tenure as the Director of Cricket at the Delhi Capitals. Iyer is currently leading the Mumbai Falcons in the Mumbai League 2025. After leading Punjab Kings to the finals in IPL 2025, Iyer’s Mumbai Falcons have also reached the finals of the league.
Meanwhile, in the absence of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, the responsibility of scoring runs and taking the team to the safe lines is now on the young shoulders of Shubman Gill and vice-captain Rishabh Pant. There is a possibility that both Karun Nair and Sai Sudharsan get a chance in the playing XI unless the Indian cricket team decides to play a seam bowling all-rounder in Shardul Thakur or Nitish Kumar Reddy.
When Sourav Ganguly was asked if he was giving Team India a chance in the upcoming series, he replied:
“Yes, sure. We just need two things, batting well and [Jasprit] Bumrah remaining fit. We won in Australia, in Melbourne (2020-21), with a young batting line-up, having no [Virat] Kohli, no Rohit Sharma. So, I do not see why we cannot win.”
Talking about the England cricket team, teen fast bowler Eddie Jack has been invited to train with England’s senior team ahead of the first Test against India, following his standout performances for the England Lions in two four-day matches against India A.
The 19-year-old from Hampshire impressed selectors after he dismissed KL Rahul, who had scored a century, during the second unofficial Test in Northampton, which ended in a draw. That performance, along with others, has put the spotlight on Jack as a rising talent.
At 6-foot-4, Jack made a strong impression on the England Lions coaching team, which includes former internationals Andrew Flintoff, Mark Wood, and Graeme Swann, according to The Times (London).
Despite not yet debuting in the County Championship for Hampshire, Jack has already played two first-class matches, both against India A, and represented England U-19s in South Africa earlier this year. He also claimed five wickets in a recent warm-up game against Zimbabwe, playing for a combined counties side.
During the Northampton match, Jack repeatedly challenged top Indian batters like Nitish Reddy and Dhruv Jurel. He eventually got Jurel out, the same player who starred in the Ranchi Test against England back in 2022, and finished the innings with figures of 2 for 71.
