South Africa T20 World Cup Squad: A big change in the South African T20 World Cup team has been Shabnim Ismail, who had previously retired from international cricket but is now back with the team for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup to be held in June in the UK.
The 37-year-old Ismail last played for South Africa in 2023 before retiring from international cricket but is now going to back to being part of South Africa’s bowling unit again after her recent success in various leagues around the world.
Experienced Stars Return for South Africa
The past year has seen South African cricket welcome back a number of experienced players through their T20 World Cup squad.
Marizanne Kapp, one of South Africa’s most successful allrounders, is returning after being unwell during the last few months, while Dané van Niekerk, a former captain of South Africa and who made a recent return to the sports world, will also be present at this T20 World Cup event.
Laura Wolvaardt will lead this side for the second year in a row as she leads a mix of experienced players in the likes of Tazmin Britts ,Suné Luus, Chloé Tryon and Ayabonga Khaka and younger talent who will play an important part in this campaign.
Young Talent Added to the South Africa T20 World Cup Squad
Selectors have mixed seasoned veterans with youthful ambition in choosing an enjoyable group of youthful players to be part of the squad. An explosive batter, Kayla Reyneke has been selected to play for the South African Senior World Cup side for the first time, due to her outstanding performances at Under-19 level
Another returnee to the team after being successful in her recovery from a wrist injury is wicketkeeper/batter Karabo Meso she also played for South Africa in an Under 19 context and will be able to add to the depth of young talent we have currently in SA.
Coach Mandla Mashimbyi Excited About Ismail’s Return
Mandla Mashimbyi, the head coach, is very pleased to see Ismail (and those other senior players) back in action! He has faith in Ismail’s willingness/ability to support South Africa’s efforts to win an ICC title. He thinks bringing seasoned players onto the team provides much needed experience/knowledge during a highly competitive tournament.
Shabnim Ismail’s Franchise Success Continues
Ismail has not slowed down since leaving international cricket, having played in many franchises around the world and helping the Mumbai Indians win the Women’s Premier League title in 2025.
Additionally, since retiring, Ismail has played 92 T20s in a variety of tournaments such as the Women’s Big Bash, Caribbean Premier League and The Hundred.
Anneke Bosch Misses Out
The omission of Anneke Bosch from South Africa’s T20 World Cup squad was one of the biggest shocks this outrageous decision has sparked debate amongst both fans and cricket experts leading up to tournament commencement. Bosch played an integral part in South Africa reaching the Final of the last 20-over World Cup.

South Africa Begin Campaign Against Australia
As of June 13th, South African teams will begin competing in the Women’s T20 World Cup against the women’s national Australian team in Manchester.
The South African national team appears well-balanced with their balance of veteran stars returning and young stars entering the roster. Overall, they should be able to continue deep runs through this year’s tournament.
