South Africa’s team for ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 announced: 8 fresh faces in the lineup

South Africa’s 15-player squad for the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India has been unveiled, featuring eight newcomers, with Temba Bavuma as the captain. Learn about the team’s composition and their prospects in the tournament.

Rob Walter, the head coach of South Africa’s white-ball team, revealed on Tuesday a 15-player roster for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, which will be held in India from October 5 to November 19.

One of eight players who has received their first World Cup call-up, Temba Bavuma will captain the team in his first 50-over World Cup.

The bowling attack will be led by the seasoned Kagiso Rabada and feature the dynamic quartet of Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi, and Gerald Coetzee.

Due to the favorable subcontinental weather and the fact that the tournament is being played in India, spinners are anticipated to play a significant role. At least three spinners are available for the team: Keshav Maharaj, Tabraiz Shamsi, and Aiden Markram.

Experienced batsmen like Quinton de Kock, Reeza Hendricks, Heinrich Klaasen, Aiden Markram, David Miller, and Rassie van der Dussen will be in charge of the batting unit.

The team is completed by all-arounders Sisanda Magala and Marco Jansen.

Commenting on the squad selection, Walter said: “It is always tough choosing a World Cup squad and I’ve said it a couple of times, the stronger the depth of your team, the better the players are that you’re leaving out.

“It’s great having a mix of experienced players and players who will be competing in their first 50-over World Cup – you get that sort of exuberance of excitement to be doing something for the first time.

“Similar to the level of experience, we have endeavoured to curate a well-balanced group of players and skill, that will allow us to effectively adapt to the conditions in India. Under the leadership of Temba and the senior group, I have the utmost faith this squad will make South Africa proud.”

At the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, South Africa will open its World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka on October 7. They are slated to play exhibition games against Afghanistan on September 29 and New Zealand on October 2 before that.
