Spain Clinches Historic Women’s World Cup Victory, Defeating England 1-0 in Thrilling Final
Spain emerges victorious in FIFA Women’s World Cup, defeating England 1-0 in a thrilling final match, with Olga Carmona’s goal.
Spain has claimed a historic victory in the FIFA Women’s World Cup, securing the title with a 1-0 win over England in a thrilling final held here on Sunday. Olga Carmona took the spotlight as her 29th-minute goal sealed Spain’s triumph, making them the fifth team to have their name inscribed on the coveted trophy.
The triumph marks Spain as the second country, after Germany, to win both the men’s and women’s World Cup titles. Spain’s men’s team clinched victory in 2010, adding to the nation’s footballing glory.
In a fully-packed Stadium Australia, the showdown saw two teams, Spain and England, reaching the tournament final for the first time. England secured their place by defeating co-hosts Australia 3-1, while Spain overcame Sweden with a hard-fought 2-1 victory.
Spain made a tactical change by substituting Alexia Putellas with Salma Paralluelo in a 4-3-3 formation. On the other hand, England retained their starting lineup despite Lauren James being available after suspension.
The match began with both teams creating opportunities after a series of well-executed plays. Lauren Hemp came close to giving England the lead in the 16th minute, but her left-footed shot hit the crossbar.
Spain responded swiftly as Paralluelo missed connecting with a Carmona cross, which found Alba Redondo instead. However, Redondo’s shot was thwarted by England’s Mary Earps.
Spain surged ahead in the 29th minute by regaining possession in midfield. Teresa Abelleira initiated an attack down the left flank, and Mariona Caldentey passed the ball to Carmona. Carmona unleashed a powerful first-time shot that sailed past Earps into the net.
Spain had an opportunity to double their lead just before halftime, but Paralluelo’s effort grazed the post.
The Lionesses introduced Lauren James and Chloe Kelly in the second half to bolster their attack. However, Spain continued to threaten, with Caldentey forcing a save from Earps and Aitana Bonmati firing over the bar.
In the 64th minute, a VAR check resulted in a penalty for Spain after the ball struck Keira Walsh’s hand. Jennifer Hermoso stepped up to take the spot-kick, but Earps produced a heroic save to deny her.
England’s Lauren James tested Spain’s goalkeeper Cata Coll in the 76th minute, but her shot was deflected away.
As the clock ticked down, Spain remained a threat, and Earps made another save to deny Ona Batlle’s deflected strike.
In a last-ditch effort, Earps joined the attack for a stoppage-time corner, but the comeback attempt fell short.
Spain’s victory in the Women’s World Cup marks a significant achievement for a team making just their third appearance in the tournament. Their journey includes a round of 16 exit four years ago and a group stage exit in 2015.
