Sri Lanka Names 19-Member Squad For 2nd Test Against Bangladesh

Sri Lanka has named a 19-member squad for the second Test against Bangladesh, set for July 25-29 at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. Two changes have been made from the squad that played the drawn first Test.

Veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews has retired from Test cricket after featuring in the first Test in Galle, which ended in a rain-affected draw despite Bangladesh’s strong performance.

“The Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Committee has named the below 19-member squad for the second test match,” the official statement read.

Sri Lanka has included left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage and fast bowler Vishwa Fernando in their squad for the second Test against Bangladesh.

Wellalage and Vishwa Fernando Added to the Squad

Wellalage, who debuted against Pakistan, gets another chance despite not taking a wicket in his first Test. Meanwhile, Fernando adds experience with 27 Tests and 79 wickets, and could be useful with the ball early on in Colombo’s seam-friendly conditions.

“Milan Rathnayake will not take part in the 2nd Test Match, as he has suffered a left side strain while bowling during the 1st Test,” the statement added.

What Happened in the First Test Between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh?

After the Test series, both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will play three ODIs on July 2, 5, and 8, followed by three T20Is on July 10, 13, and 16 to wrap up the tour.

Bangladesh and Sri Lanka began their World Test Championship 2025-27 journey with a hard-fought draw. For Bangladesh, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto scored 148 and Mushfiqur Rahim made 163, helping the team post 495 runs. Litton Das also chipped in with 90.

Sri Lanka replied strongly with Pathum Nissanka’s brilliant 187. Dinesh Chandimal (54) and Kamindu Mendis (87) also made key contributions as the hosts reached 485.

In the second innings, Shanto scored another century, becoming only the 18th Test captain to hit hundreds in both innings of a match. Shadman Islam added 76 before Bangladesh declared at 285/6. Sri Lanka’s top order struggled at 48/4, but the match ended in a draw.
