Sudirman Cup 2021: Thailand beats India 4-1 in the Group A encounter

Thailand gave Indian Badminton Team its first defeat of the Sudirman Cup 2021 as they comfortably won the group stage encounter.

The Sudirman Cup 2021 – the 17th Edition of the prestigious tournament got underway today, 26th September, Sunday at the Energia Areena in Vantaa, Finland. Sudirman Cup a World Mixed Team Badminton Championships will be played from 26th Sep – 3rd Oct with a new format this time as 16 Teams will contest as 4 Groups with 4 Teams each.

For India, two-star players are missing from the action in Finland, in form of PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal.

Whereas, Indian Men’s Doubles Players – Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty withdrew last-minute from the Sudirman Cup 2021 on medical grounds.

India is placed in Group A, a tough group with defending champions China, Thailand, and hosts Finland. India faced Thailand in its opening encounter of the group stage and had a disappointing result by losing 1-4.

Meanwhile, India vs Thailand encounter happened in Court 2 of Energia Areena.

Men’s Doubles was the 1st Match as India’s Arjun M.R. and Dhruv Kapila were against Thailand’s Supak Jomkoh and Kittinupong Kedren. The Indian pair won the match in two straight games 21-18, 21-17, and gave India a 1-0 lead.

However, next was the Women’s Singles Match where Thailand leveled up 1-1 as World No. 10 Pornpawee Chochuwong won comfortably in two straight games 21-11, 21-14 against the young Indian Malvika Bansod ranked 110th.

Men’s Singles – Next as Indian fans may have their hope on Srikanth Kidambi to shift back it to India’s favor. But that didn’t happen as India’s World No. 14 lost to Thai World No. 25 Kunlavut Vitidsarn in straight games 21-9, 21-19. As a result, Thailand leading 2-1.

The next match – Women’s Doubles – India’s Ashwini Ponnappa/N. Sikki Reddy gave a tough fight in 1st Game to Thai World No. 8 Pair Jongkolphan Kititharakul/Rawinda Prajongjai. But lost dominance in 2nd Game as the Thai duo won in straight games 23-21, 21-8. Thus, Thailand was confirmed of victory with a 3-1 lead.

Therefore, the last Match i.e., Mixed Doubles result for India wouldn’t have mattered. India’s had sent its Men’s Singles Player B. Sai Praneeth to partner with the 18-year-old Tanisha Crasto in Mixed Doubles. The World No. 3 Thai pair Sapsiree Taerattanachai/Dechapol Puavaranukroh dominated this match 21-13, 21-11 as the Indian pair were uncoordinated.

Hence, the scorecard read Thailand 4 – 1 India. Team India will next face China – Tomorrow, 27th September.
