Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal showcased his prowess by clinching a place in the men’s singles main draw of the Australian Open after a decisive victory against Alex Molcan of Slovakia, concluding the qualifiers on Friday. Ranked 139th in the world, Nagal’s win marks his return to a Grand Slam main draw since 2021, and it’s his fourth overall appearance in such a prestigious event.
Nagal initially made headlines in the 2019 US Open, where he made his Grand Slam main draw debut and faced tennis legend Roger Federer in the opening round. Despite losing the match 6-4, 1-6, 2-6, 4-6, Nagal managed to claim the first set against Federer.
The Indian continued to make waves in the 2020 US Open, securing a victory in the opening round against Bradley Klahn. He became the first Indian since Somdev Devvarman in the 2013 US Open to win a singles match in the main draw of a Grand Slam. Nagal’s journey, however, was halted by eventual champion Dominic Thiem in the second round.
In the 2021 Australian Open, Nadal faced an opening-round defeat against Lithuania’s Ricardas Berankis with a scoreline of 2-6, 5-7, 3-6. Now, with his recent qualifier triumph, Nagal is geared up for his next challenge in the main draw of the Australian Open.
