American swimming stars Regan Smith and Gretchen Walsh clinched a gold medal each at the ongoing World Aquatics Short Course Swimming World Championships (25m) 2024 in Budapest, Hungary. With this, they added two golds to Team USA’s growing medal haul.
Smith, who won five medals at the Olympic Games Paris 2024, clocked a 54.55 to create a championship record, winning the women’s 100m backstroke final. Teammate Katharine Berkoff finished 0.38 seconds behind at 54.93 to take the second place. Canada’s Ingrid Wilm rounded off the podium (55.75).
On the other hand, Walsh, who won four medals at Paris 2024, touched the wall at 24.01 to take the women’s 50m butterfly title. She clocked the third-fastest time in the event after she lowered the world record twice on the opening day of the Swimming World Championships 2024 , first to 24.02 in the morning heats and then to 23.94 in the semi-finals.
France’s Beryl Gastaldello (24.43) and Australia’s Alexandria Perkins (24.68) bagged the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Women’s competition came to an end on Wednesday with the women’s 800m freestyle final, which saw Australia’s Lani Pallister top the podium after a championship record time of 8:01.95.
In the men’s events, Miron Lifintsev clinched victory in the 100m backstroke, while Noe Ponti took the gold in the 50m butterfly. Switzerland’s Ponti’s 21.32 holds the world record in the event.
