Phoebe Litchfield and Chamari Athapaththu led Sydney Thunder to a convincing win in the Women’s Big Bash League 2023, as they defeated Sydney Sixers by a 42-run margin at North Sydney Stadium on Sunday.
In the opening innings, Chamari Athapaththu and Tahila Wilson formed a formidable partnership, scoring 98 runs together and putting significant pressure on the Sixers. Athapaththu, taking 34 balls to reach her half-century, displayed an outstanding performance, reminiscent of her career-best T20 score of 113 achieved in 2019. She replaced Marizanne Kapp, who was unavailable due to an illness contracted in South Africa.

Left-handed batswoman Phoebe Litchfield took over from Chamari, contributing an unbeaten 54 runs off 28 balls, boosting her team’s total to 190/5 after 20 overs.
In the absence of Alysa Healy, Elyse Perry assumed responsibility, starting with 31 runs off 16 deliveries, including six fours and a six, before being dismissed by Heather Knight. Ultimately, the Thunder’s bowlers secured victory with consistent wicket-taking, sealing the match with a 42-run lead.
Chamari Athapaththu was the standout performer, not only with the bat but also with the ball, claiming 3-20 in her 4 overs. Heather Knight also made a significant contribution, taking 3-27 from her 4 overs.
