T20 World Cup Semi Final: Match Results of SA vs NZ in T20 World Cup (2007-2026)

5 Min Read

The 2026 T20 World Cup is in its penultimate stage with three matches to go before a team lifts the title. Four teams are still in contention for a place in the final, and it will be interesting to see if we get a new champion or if England or India are crowned the winners again on March 8 at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

The Contest

First, it will be the finalists of the 2024 T20 World Cup South Africa who will take on New Zealand at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata in the first semi-final on Wednesday (March 4). Both teams are in search of their first T20 World Cup trophy, having not won it in the previous nine editions.

Both teams will put their best foot forward to register a win in this particular game and confirm their spot in the final scheduled to be held on Sunday. South Africa and New Zealand are coming into the semi-final on the back of a strong performance in the first two rounds with bat, ball, and in the field and would aim to replicate the same in order to get the better of each other.

The Conditions

The match, which is going to be played at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, is expected to be a high-scoring contest, as was the case in the previous match played at this ground between India and West Indies that saw India chase down a total of 196 runs in the last over of the game.

The Combination

It would be interesting to see the number of spinners that both teams pick in their playing XI for this particular match, given that the pitch might have something in it for the spinners, while dew is also expected to play its part in the second innings.

Players to Watch Out For

Both teams have some quality players at their disposal in both batting and bowling departments who have the capability of turning the game in their favour in the blink of an eye.

While New Zealand will back its openers to get the team off to a good start with the bat and lay a platform for the incoming batters to capatalize on, the onus will also be on captain Mitchell Santner to lead from the front and Matt Henry to pick wickets in the first six overs.

South Africa, on the other hand, would want their top three batters to fire in order to get the opposition bowling attack, which happens to be in goodform under pressure. In the bowling side of things, the captain and the management would rely on the bowlers to do the bulk of the damage.

The Record

Talking about the record of matches involving South Africa and New Zealand in the history of the T20 World Cup, the two sides have gone head-to-head on five occasions so far in the competition, with South Africa registering a win in each of those games.
