T20 World Cup: Sri Lanka trounces Netherlands, restrict them to a low score of 44
Wanidu Hasaranga and Lahiru Kumara took three wickets each to dismiss the Dutch for a low score of 44. Sri Lanka comfortably chased the total with eight wickets to spare.
The 12th Match of the 2021 T20 World Cup was played between Sri Lanka and the Netherlands on Friday, October 22nd, 2021, at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in the United Arab Emirates. This encounter was the last match of Group A in Round 1. This also marked the end of Round 1 of the 2021 T20 World Cup, as we go into the Super 12’s.
This 2021 T20 World Cup consists of two rounds; Round 1 has eight teams divided into Group A & Group B. From here, four teams will qualify for – the Super 12’s.
Earlier, another match from Group A – Namibia vs Ireland was played, where Namibia won the match by 8 wickets, with that result writing history as they have qualified for the next round.
Thus, the final Group A standings are as follows – Sri Lanka is at the top with 6 points, Namibia is at the 2nd position with 4 points, Ireland are at 3rd with 2 points and the Netherlands, being winless are at the bottom.

1st Innings – Netherlands dismissed for 44
It was a batting collapse for the Netherlands as they could only put a mere 44 Runs on the scoreboard. This is the second-lowest total in Men’s T20 World Cup.
The Dutch lost wickets in quick succession. They probably couldn’t bat well as the Sri Lankan bowlers didn’t give them any chance to due to their excellent bowling performance.
The Sri Lankan bowling unit had demolished the Dutch side, with both Maheesh Theekshana & Wanindu Hasaranga taking 2 wickets in an over. Whereas, Lahiru Kumara went one step ahead as he picked 3 wickets in an over and ended the Netherlands innings at just 44.
The highest individual score for the Netherlands in this match was from Colin Ackermann who just scored 11 runs off 9 balls.
2nd Innings – Sri Lanka just needs 45 Runs to win
Chasing a low total score, Sri Lanka lost their 1st wicket with the opener Pathum Nissanka going for a duck. At this stage, Sri Lanka were 7/1 in 1.3 overs.
However, their wicket-keeper Kusal Perera took the responsibility to finish this as soon as possible. He scored 33 runs off 24 balls. Perera’s unbeaten innings saw 6 Fours and his strike rate was 137.50.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka chased this total in just under ten overs. They finished at 45/2 (7.1 overs).
As a result, Sri Lanka won the match by 8 Wickets. They already qualified for the Super 12’s.
The Player of the Match was awarded to Lahiru Kumara for his excellent bowling spell of 3/7 with an economy of 2.33.
