In the men’s 3,000 meters steeplechase event, Moroccan athlete Soufiane El Bakkali, the reigning Olympic gold medallist, clinched his second consecutive world championship title. El Bakkali managed to hold off Ethiopia’s Lamecha Girma, the world record holder and Olympic silver medallist, with a time of 8 minutes and 3.53 seconds. Girma secured his fourth consecutive global silver with a time of 8:05.44. Abraham Kibiwot, the Commonwealth Games champion, secured the bronze by outpacing his teammate Leonard Kipkemoi Bett, finishing with a time of 8:11.98.
In the women’s 1500m race, Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon dominated the track from start to finish, successfully retaining her world title. Kipyegon’s exceptional performance was unrivaled as she crossed the finish line with a time of 3 minutes and 54.87 seconds. Ethiopia’s Diribe Welteji secured the second position with a time of 3:55.69, while Dutch athlete Sifan Hassan, who faced disappointment in the 10,000m race due to a fall just meters before the finish, claimed the bronze with a time of 3:56.00. Kipyegon’s victory adds to her achievements in the event, as she had already set the world record earlier this year.
