England’s sensational all-rounder Ben Stokes has ruled himself out of the upcoming edition of The Hundred to prioritize his fitness and focus on the longest format of the game. Ben Stokes wants to keep it light as he is managing his workload ahead of the much-awaited Ashes 2024-25 series in Australia, which is going to be a crucial moment in his captaincy.
For the unversed, Ben Stokes doesn’t have good memories with The Hundred. The stylish all-rounder has scored only 14 runs with the bat in five matches at a dismal average of 3.50. During last year’s edition of The Hundred, Ben Stokes suffered a hamstring injury that sidelined him from competitive cricket for two months.
As per a report by ESPN Cricinfo, Ben Stokes has decided to withdraw from The Hundred after discussing it with his head coach Andrew Flintoff. Ben Stokes is currently recovering from a hamstring injury that worsened during England’s tour to New Zealand.
“ESPNcricinfo has learned that Stokes made the decision based on his upcoming schedule after consultation with Andrew Flintoff, who took over as Northern Superchargers’ men’s coach last year. He is currently recovering from surgery to his left hamstring,” the report stated.
Stokes had surgery for a torn left hamstring and will need about three months to recover. As a result, he was not included in the squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and also didn’t sign up for the IPL 2025 Mega Auction. This break gives him enough time to recover before England’s home Test series against India in June.
The Hundred 2025 will start on August 5, the day after England finishes their five-match Test series against India. With the Ashes starting in Perth on November 21, Ben Stokes is focusing on being fully fit for that series against their rivals.
England hasn’t won the Ashes in almost ten years, and the upcoming series in Australia will be a tough challenge. Ben Stokes’ all-round skills will be key, but his recent injury problems have made it hard for him to stay fit.
Stokes is expected to return to action in County Championship matches for Durham before England’s international summer starts. England’s home season begins in May with a Test match against Zimbabwe, followed by a five-match Test series against India. After losing 1-4 to India in the series last year, Stokes will be eager to get revenge.
This series will also kick off the 2025–27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle for both teams. After missing out on the 2025 WTC Final, England and India will be determined to earn important points early in the new cycle.
