The tournament is named after Sultan Azlan Shah who was a big supporter of the sport. It was started in Kuala Lumpur but now it has a permanent home at the Azlan Shah Stadium in Ipoh since 2007.  Australia has been successful in winning the Cup ten times. The Hockey Asia Cup is not famous globally, but it is important in Asian field hockey. It was started in 1982 and became an important tournament that decides who gets the title of Asian champion and a ticket to the FIH Hockey World Cup in 1998. It is held every two years, it became an annual event in 2005 which developed field hockey in Asia. In the starting, Pakistan and India were dominant, but as time passed, other countries like South Korea, Malaysia, and Japan stepped up. South Korea has five titles now which shows how the tournament helps Asian hockey grow and become more diverse. It also introduces shorter versions like Hockey5s. 

6. Pan American Championship

The Pan American Cup in field hockey is not a big tournament like the Olympics. At first, the men’s and women’s tournaments were held together which created healthy competition. Argentina is a top team globally and was dominant, especially in the Women’s Cup, while Argentina and the United States battled for the men’s title. The COVID-19 pandemic caused delays and venue changes. In 2021, the Men’s Cup was held in Chile separately, while the Women’s event thrived in Santiago in 2022.

Over the years, more teams joined through regional qualifiers which shows that the tournament helps nurture talent in Africa and gives players a chance on the international stage.
