Field hockey is mainly a type of hockey. It has many hockey tournaments in the world as the World Cup of Hockey, Summer Olympics, and many more related to hockey where players from different parts of the world participate and make their team and country win. 

1. World Cup

The World Cup of Hockey is one of the most popular tournaments in the world. The FIH Hockey World Cup which was started in 1971 has a longer history and is held every four years. It involves more countries which makes it an international field hockey event. Now, the World Cup of Hockey was started in 1996. This competition with only national teams featuring NHL stars. FIH World Cup is famous worldwide but the World Cup of Hockey has its charm with talent and intense games, especially in North America. 

2. Summer Olympics

Field hockey at the Summer Olympics is not as famous as football or basketball in the world but it is important in the field hockey world. It joined the Olympics in 1908 at first only men could participate. At that time European nations dominated this tournament but India became the new champion with eight gold medals. This made the Olympics the ultimate event for field hockey which inspired the teams. Women’s field hockey joined the Olympics in 1976. While European and Asian teams continued, countries like Argentina, Australia, and the Netherlands became strongest.

3. Champions Trophy

The Champions Trophy used to be a tournament in field hockey that brought together the best 6 nations to compete for gold. It was started in 1978 and even added a women’s edition in 1987. In 2014, it became a tournament that was held every two years because of the Hockey World League. This tournament had some challenges, like clashes with other important tournaments. In 2018, the Champions Trophy ended. It was replaced by the FIH Pro League which aimed to create a more organized international competition.

4. Sultan Azlan Shah Cup

The Sultan Azlan Shah Cup was started in 1983 and is a tournament in field hockey. It used to be held every two years but became an annual event in 1998. The tournament is named after Sultan Azlan Shah who was a big supporter of the sport. It was started in Kuala Lumpur but now it has a permanent home at the Azlan Shah Stadium in Ipoh since 2007.  Australia has been successful in winning the Cup ten times. 5. Hockey Asia Cup

The Hockey Asia Cup is not famous globally, but it is important in Asian field hockey. It was started in 1982 and became an important tournament that decides who gets the title of Asian champion and a ticket to the FIH Hockey World Cup in 1998. It is held every two years, it became an annual event in 2005 which developed field hockey in Asia. In the starting, Pakistan and India were dominant, but as time passed, other countries like South Korea, Malaysia, and Japan stepped up. South Korea has five titles now which shows how the tournament helps Asian hockey grow and become more diverse. It also introduces shorter versions like Hockey5s. 

6. Pan American Championship

The Pan American Cup in field hockey is not a big tournament like the Olympics. At first, the men’s and women’s tournaments were held together which created healthy competition. Argentina is a top team globally and was dominant, especially in the Women’s Cup, while Argentina and the United States battled for the men’s title. The COVID-19 pandemic caused delays and venue changes. In 2021, the Men’s Cup was held in Chile separately, while the Women’s event thrived in Santiago in 2022. 

7. Commonwealth Games

The Commonwealth Games may not be the biggest field hockey tournament. It was started in 1998 and became a big tournament  At first, it was not as big as the World Cup or Olympics, but it changed. Since 2018, it became the first big sports event to give equal chances for men and women to win medals. It is held every four years. Big field hockey nations like Australia, England, and India play alongside newer teams like Ghana and Kenya. 

8. European Championships

The European Championships in field hockey is super popular and has been around since 1970. It started with the Men’s Championships in Brussels, Belgium held every year and later every two years. The Women’s competition joined in 1984 which makes it a complete championship. As the years passed, it even added indoor hockey in 2007 which gave more chances for European players to show their skills. 

9. FIH Pro League

The FIH Pro League is a field hockey tournament. It was started in 2019 and became one of the top tournaments. At first, nine top teams played a tough season of matches which made the competition super high-level. It split matches between two seasons to reduce travel and introduced mini-tournaments in specific places to make things smoother. 

10. African Cup of Nations hockey

The African Cup of Nations is not as popular worldwide as big tournaments like the Olympics or the World Cup. It is more important within Africa. It was started in 1974 for men and in 1990 for women which decides the best teams in the continent and offers a chance to qualify for the FIH Hockey World Cup. South Africa has been dominant for years, especially in men’s and women’s competitions with Zimbabwe also doing well in women’s games. Over the years, more teams joined through regional qualifiers which shows that the tournament helps nurture talent in Africa and gives players a chance on the international stage.
