The late Italian-American professional wrestler, Bruno Sammartino, is at the first spot in our list of the top four longest reigning WWE champions in the history of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Often referred to as “The Living Legend,” Bruno Sammartino clinched the inaugural WWE Championship by defeating Buddy Rogers in just 48 seconds at Madison Square Garden.

Bruno Sammartino successfully held the record for the longest singles reign as WWE Champion, reigning for an unprecedented 2,803 days from May 17, 1963, to January 18, 1971. Owing to his path-breaking legacy as a professional wrestler, Bruno Sammartino was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013 by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

  • Bob Backlund – 2,135 Days

Next, at the second spot in our list of the top four WWE champions who have defended their championship titles for the longest time, we have the American retired amateur and professional wrestler, Rober Louis Backlund, often popularly referred to as “Bob Backlund”.

Bob Backlund defeated “Superstar” Billy Graham to win the title and successfully defended it for an incredible count of 2,135 days—from February 20, 1978, to December 26, 1983—making it the second-longest singular reign in the history of WWE. Well, throughout his supreme reign, Bob Backlund defended the championship against some of the greatest names of the era, including Greg Valentine, Don Muraco and Big John Studd. Bob Backlund was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013.

  • Hulk Hogan – 1,474 Days

The retired American professional wrestler, Terry Gene Bollea, popularly referred to as “Hulk Hogan”, is at the third spot in our list of the top four longest reigning WWE champions in the history of World Wrestling Entertainment. Often commemorated as the most popular and deadly wrestler of the 1980s and one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time, Hulk Hogan’s first WWE Championship reign lasted an astonishing 1,474 days, from January 23, 1984, to February 5, 1988. Hulk Hogan successfully defended his championship title against some of the most prominent WWE wrestlers, including Roddy Piper, Paul Orndorff, King Kong Bundy, and Andre the Giant during the reign. Owing to his legacy and reigning championship title, Hulk Hogan was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005.

  • Roman Reigns – 1,316 Days

Finally, at the fourth spot in our list of the top four longest reigning WWE champions, we have the American professional wrestler and former football player, Leati Joseph Anoa’i, popularly referred to by his ring name “Roman Reigns”. Often hailed as one of the greatest professional wrestlers in the world, Roman Reign began his supreme reign on August 30, 2020, at Payback, when he defeated Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman in a triple threat match to clinch the WWE Universal Championship.

Roman Reigns fearlessly defended his title for 1,316 days and defeated numerous legendary WWE wrestlers, including John Cena, Edge, Daniel Bryan, Brock Lesnar, Drew McIntyre, and Cody Rhodes during his reign. Well, unfortunately, Roman Reigns’ 1316-day-long reign came to an end at WrestleMania 40 in April 2024, when Cody Rhodes defeated him.
