1. Judit Polgar

The best of the best. Judit Polgar never entered into the running for the Women’s World Championship as she spent her time fighting the best players in the world, regardless of gender. 

She has defeated Chess legends like Garry Kasparov, Magnus Carlsen and Viswanathan Anand. 

Judit Polgar became one of the top ten players in the world. She is still, to this day, the only female player in history to have a 2700+ rating.

She held the title of the top-rated female player in the world for over 20 years. No player has even come close to that kind of dominance while competing against male and female competitors alike.

2. Hou Yifan

Hou Yifan is a modern-day cycling phenomenon. At the age of 16, she became the youngest female to attain the title of World Champion in chess, and since then she has had several more victories under her belt.

Furthermore, she has participated in open tournaments across the globe, defeating top ranked chess players such as Fabiano Caruana, and competing at the highest level of play throughout her career.

She began to balance her commitment to chess while continuing her education, and ultimately became a professor, demonstrating her ability to excel both on the chessboard and in her academic pursuits.

3. Maia Chiburdanidze

A prodigy who delivered. Maia Chiburdanidze became Women’s World Champion at just 17 and held the title for 13 years.

She didn’t just dominate women’s chess; she broke into the global rankings, becoming the first woman to enter the top 50. Her consistency at Olympiads and ability to compete with top male players made her one of the most complete players of her era.

4. Nona Gaprindashvili

In every respect, Nona Gaprindashvili was a pioneer. In 1978, she was the first woman to achieve the Grandmaster title over the entire world, not just for her female competitors. 

In the 16 years during which she was the women’s world champion, she was victorious at numerous Olympiads, winning numerous individual and team gold medals. 

To this day, she continues to compete and win at elite levels, demonstrating an unusual amount of longevity in the game of chess.

5. Vera Menchik

The original trailblazer. Menchik became the first Women’s World Champion and proved nearly a century ago that chess wasn’t just a man’s game.

Her dominance was unreal. She won 78 out of 83 games in World Championship events, losing just once. She even held her own against top male players of her time, including Max Euwe.

Her legacy lives on through the Women’s Olympiad trophy, the Vera Menchik Cup.
