Trent Rockets, one of the eight clubs of The Hundred, has concluded its private investment agreement, joining the seventh team to do so. The investment is part of an ongoing effort by the ECB to bring private equity into the competition, raising more than £500 million for English cricket.

John Knox Appointed to Trent Rockets Board

John Knox, Chair of Cricket New South Wales (NSW) and a partner at Ares Management, has now joined the Trent Rockets board. Ares Management and Cain International previously agreed to acquire a 49% stake in the franchise. The new structure has Trent Rockets running as a joint venture with the majority owners, Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club.

Knox, one of the most respected figures in Australian cricket administration, will be one of three investor-nominated directors on the board of the Rockets. His new appointment is separate from his role at Cricket NSW.

Investor-Backed Growth for The Hundred

Knox’s participation highlights increasing global interest in T20 franchise investment. Ares Management’s participation in The Hundred is a big step, particularly with Cricket Australia seeking similar opportunities for the Big Bash League. Knox has already described T20 cricket as a “tremendous growth opportunity.”

Knox will be joined on the Trent Rockets board by Jonathan Goldstein and Joe Stelzer, senior executives at Cain International. Representing Nottinghamshire are leading figures including Mick Newell, who is also Rockets’ General Manager.

Oval Invincibles Deal Nears Completion

The agreement with Trent Rockets is now final and Oval Invincibles is the only franchise remaining to seal their investment agreement. The Surrey County Cricket Club are working with Reliance Industries, owners of the IPL franchise Mumbai Indians. Their negotiations have been delayed by legal complications but the deal is expected to be finalised soon.

The ECB had initially placed an eight-week exclusivity timeline to complete all agreements after the auction in February. Delays, however, prompted the board to accept longer timelines for the remaining contracts.

Coaching Transition at Trent Rockets

The new board is immediately confronted with the loss of long-serving men’s head coach Andy Flower, who has left to take a role at London Spirit. Flower was instrumental in the first five seasons of The Hundred. The new coach is being sought and is a priority for the new leadership.

Financial Boost for English Cricket

The private equity transactions across all eight of The Hundred franchises have brought more than £500 million into the game, improving the overall financial sustainability of English Cricket. The investment will be shared across all 18 first-class counties. Notable examples include Gloucestershire, who recently announced that they have cleared all historical debts after being in the red for over 20 years.
