In the recent update of the ICC ODI Player Rankings post the ODI World Cup, India’s Virat Kohli showcased a remarkable rise, securing the third spot, while his teammate Shubman Gill maintains his leading position.
Kohli’s exceptional performance in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, where he accumulated 765 runs, propelled him to third place, just 35 rating points shy of Gill, who continues to reign at the top of the batting chart.
Gill holds firm with 826 rating points, narrowly ahead of Pakistan’s skipper Babar Azam, securing the second spot with 824 points. Kohli (791 points) and India’s captain Rohit Sharma (now in fourth place with 769 points, rising one spot) are closing the gap after their impressive displays in the World Cup.
During the World Cup, Kohli achieved three centuries, surpassing the record for most ODI centuries previously held by Sachin Tendulkar. Rohit amassed 597 runs alongside Kohli as the leading run scorers of the tournament.
Kohli previously held the No. 1 ranking for nearly four years, with Babar being the top-ranked player until Gill claimed the position during the World Cup.
The ascent of the Indian duo resulted in South Africa opener Quinton de Kock sliding two spots to fifth in the ODI batting rankings, while New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell climbed five places to sixth after scoring 552 runs at the World Cup.
In the bowling rankings, South Africa spinner Keshav Maharaj retains the top spot. India’s Mohammed Siraj (third) and Jasprit Bumrah (fourth) remain within the top 10, while Kuldeep Yadav dropped one place to share sixth position.
Australia’s Josh Hazlewood moved up four places to second, Mitchell Starc surged eight spots to 12th, and Pat Cummins climbed seven places to 27th following their successful World Cup campaign.
The top 10 of the ODI all-rounders’ rankings witnessed minimal changes post the World Cup, with Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan maintaining the lead. New Zealand’s Mitchell Santner fell two spots to seventh, while Bangladesh’s Mehidy Hasan Miraz ascended two places to ninth.
