Indian all-rounder, Washington Sundar’s father M Sundar is doing everything he could to not let COVID-19 get to his son. The senior Sundar has been staying in a different house as that of Washington because working in the Income Tax department in Chennai, he has to visit the office every two-three days of a week. Hence staying in a different house would minimize or negate any chance of Washington contracting the deadly virus.

Since Washington has returned home after IPL 2021 suspension, the father has seen his son only in video calls so that he doesn’t want to risk his son’s dream of playing at Lord’s and other England ground.

India will be playing ICC World Test Championship final against New Zealand between 18-22th June at Rose Bowl in Southampton. Followed by a five-match Test series against England, in England in the month of August – September. Sundar has been named in a 20 member squad that will fly to England.

If any player tests positive for COVID-19 while they gather at Mumbai airport for an England flight, then he cannot be a part of the tour, BCCI had announced beforehand.

Talking to The New Indian Express, M Sundar said –

“Since Washington returned home from the IPL, I have been staying in another house. My wife and daughter are staying with Washington since they don’t step out of the house. I am only seeing him on video calls. I am having to go to the office a few days a week. I don’t want him to contract COVID-19 because of me,” M Sundar said.

“He has always wanted to play at Lord’s and at other venues in England. It has been a long-standing aim of his. He doesn’t want to miss out on this tour at any cost,” he said.

Washington has been in splendid form in red-ball format displaying his all-around skills in Australia. With Indian veterans like Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin back in the mix, it will be exciting who makes the cut for playing eleven.
