What can be done to stop this spot-kicking juggernaut that has triumphed in every shootout it has participated in on the largest platform in football, whether as West Germany or Germany? We have examined every penalty they have ever taken in a World Cup shootout to see how they succeed and where their competitors falter. We’ve done the math to uncover Germany’s astounding stats and to find some hints as to how opposition teams might be able to halt them in Russia this summer.
Germany’s Impressive Shooting Stats:
According to the data, Germany‘s reputation as the best at shootouts is wholly warranted. They have only ever missed one kick the entire time they have competed in penalty shootouts at a World Cup, and they have won every single one. They have participated in four shootouts, losing to France in 1982, Mexico in 1986, England in 1990, and Argentina in 2006. In those four shootouts, they attempted 18 kicks and made all 18 of them.
Uli Stielke of Real Madrid saw his attempt denied by French goalie Jean-Luc Ettori in Germany’s first shootout, which was their lone World Cup loss. Since then, German players have scored 15 straight penalties in World Cup shootouts. Nine out of the 18 penalties saw opposing goalkeepers diving in the proper direction, but Ettori was the only one to make a stop or even touch the ball.
Amazingly, despite diving in the proper direction 50% of the time on the other 17 penalties, opposing goalkeepers haven’t even gotten a touch on any of them. Peter Shilton of England, for instance, always went in the proper direction in 1990, but his strategy of waiting until he knew which way the kick would go did not pay off.
Goalkeepers from Germany: Before the Game
German players took 18 penalties, 15 of which were right-footed. Their three left-footed sentences were all successful. Six of seven penalties, including the only failing, were struck high. At the World Cup, they scored whenever they kept their shot low.
In the end, there is yet to be a specific pattern to their accomplishment. Eight of the goalkeeper’s 18 penalties went to his left, seven went to his right, and three went down the centre, indicating that they use a range of strategies. Stielke’s lone miss was saved and was struck to the goalkeeper’s right, but it was not close to the corner.
What Kind of Sanctions has Germany Endured?
Fourteen of the 18 penalties awarded to Germany were made with the left foot and fourteen with the right. If you let a left-footed player, take a penalty, the statistical success percentage is only 25% because only one of the four left-footed strikes resulted in a goal. For kickers who use their right foot, that figure rises to 65%. German goalkeepers have stopped five out of fourteen right-footed shots.
In terms of height, six of the 12 attempts (or 50%) were saved after being struck low. Only one keep was made on the six high shots, and one went over the bar. That means that against Germany, 50% of low penalties result in goals, compared to 66% of high fines. Even though Germans play in various ways, opponents tend to shoot to the goalie’s right. Only five of the penalties have resulted in goals, with that direction accounting for half of them (55 per cent).
Two of the four kicks down the centre was saved (50%), whereas three of the five to the goalkeeper’s left were scored (60%), indicating it is not a sensible choice. For 11 of the 18 shots they faced, German goalkeepers dove in the proper direction (or the strike was saved or missed). Only three goals have been scored whenever a German goalie has been tackled in the appropriate order. The most significant chance of success may be that a German goalie has only dived left five times, and just two of those dives resulted in saves.
