South Africa head coach Mark Boucher is stepping down and he is a happy man. A former wicket-keeper batter, Boucher has been performing the role of a head coach for South Africa since December 2019. Under his impressive stint, Proteas won 11 Test matches. This also includes a memorable series win against India at home in January.

“Mr Boucher has decided to resign in order to pursue other opportunities in line with his future career and personal objectives,” Cricket South Africa said in a statement.

Mark Boucher has a Remarkable Record

The 45-year-old South African led his team to great heights. As a result, the South Africans are currently number two on the ICC World Test Championship table. In the limited-overs arena, Boucher has helped South Africa claim 12 ODI wins and 23 T20 International victories. The most recent being a 2-1 series triumph against England.

His coaching assignment came up when the team was undergoing rapid transition. They lost the services of an experienced bunch of players, such as Dale Steyn, AB De Villiers, Faf Du Plessis and Vernon Philander among others. However, Boucher and team management bought in ideal replacements. This restoration helped the team to bounce back on its feet.

Meanwhile, Boucher’s last bilateral series will be a white-ball tour of India from September 28 to October 11. This series is before heading to the T20 World Cup in Australia. Meanwhile, South Africa is grouped alongside Bangladesh, India and Pakistan in the World Cup. The T20 World Cup will run from October 16 to November 13.

CSA Chief Executive Officer Pholetsi Moseki heaped praises on the contribution made by Boucher in the revival of the Proteas. “He has helped navigate us through some rough waters following the departures of so many senior players through retirement and has helped lay some strong foundations for the next generation of Proteas. We are extremely grateful to him,” says the CSA top official.

Mark Boucher was a past hero

In his stint as a wicket-keeper batter, Mark Boucher played the role of a crisis man frequently. The experienced campaigner carried out several rescue operations with the lower-order batters. It is the same feat that he has served now for the South Africans, by rescuing the team from a performance crunch.
