Will Pep Guardiola break this curse in football this Sunday?

Pep Guardiola has not won a Champions League with Manchester City or Bayern Munich. The legendary manager will look to win his first Champions League away from Barcelona. Guardiola won the Champions League twice with Barcelona in 2008–09 and 2010–11. After joining Manchester City in 2016, he has won almost every trophy that they have played for except the Champions League. The great manager once was on the receiving end of a weird curse from one of his player’s agent.

What was the curse?

Yaya Toure’s agent, Dimitri Seluk has once put a curse on Pep Guardiola that he will never win another Champions Trophy. Seluk said that he had put a curse on the manager by ‘African Shamans’. Yaya Toure played under Guardiola in Barcelona and Manchester City. Toure was mostly benched by the Spanish manager during his spells at both clubs. Interestingly, Toure only made one appearance in the 2017-18 season. That was his last season for Manchester City.

Seluk’s take on the curse now

Seluk in an interview talked about the curse and said, “I want to apologise for this matter,’ I think it is time for this bitterness to stop – and I know that Yaya feels the same because he wishes nothing but success for City.”

He further stated that the spell has been lifted and said, “I can say that the spell has now been lifted by the shamans – and that I think City will win the Champions League under Pep. They have a good chance of winning it this year. But whatever happens they will definitely win it in the next three years.”

Toure’s take on the situation

At the time of his last season for City, Toure argued that Guardiola had everything possible to spoil his last season. “The day he picks a team with five Africans in it, I promise I will send him a cake”, said Toure after ‘birthday cake snub’. It supposedly resulted in his club failing to acknowledge the City legend’s birthday.

However, Toure in a tweet in May 2023 gave his clarification on the matter. Here is the tweet.

It will be interesting to see whether Guardiola will be able to break this curse and the Champions League for the very first time. Manchester City will face Inter Milan this weekend in the Champions League final. If City wins the Champions League then they will also complete their treble as they have already won the Premier League and the FA Cup where they defeated Manchester United.
