The world’s best mixed curling foursomes will gather in Aberdeen, Scotland for the World Mixed Curling Championship 2024 from 12-19 October.
The competition rinks are composed of two male and two female curlers going head-to-head over eight ends at Curl Aberdeen, testing the all-around strength of each national federation.
The World Mixed Curling Championship 2024 will begin with a group stage round held in the “round robin” format. The three top ranked rinks in each group, along with the fourth placed rink with the best draw shot challenge (DSC) average across all groups, will advance to a four round knockout stage to determine the world champion. 39 national federations are set to battle out for one world title.
World Mixed Curling Championship 2024: Key Rinks To Watch Out For
Representatives from six continents are set to contest the World Mixed Curling Championship 2024. However, there are some key rinks to watch out for in the course of the competition.
The Swedish rink of Simon Granbom, Rebecka Thunman, Johannes Patz and Mikaela Altebro will enter the championship to defend the title won by their compatriots a year prior. Granbom will act as skip for the foursome, on the back of his experience at the junior international and senior national level. He will attempt to guide the rink back to retain the crown.
Spain’s Sergio Vez will be looking to avenge his loss in the gold medal game at World Mixed Curling Championship 2023. The experienced skip returns to the championship alongside vice-skip Oihane Otaegi, second Mikel Unanue and lead Leire Otaegi. The foursome will look to add to their medal haul, which includes a pair of silver medals from 2018 and 2023 World Mixed Curling Championship.
Canada’s Shaun Meachem will also want to make the most out of his first international assignment, and build on his nation’s record of success at the World Mixed Curling Championship. He will be backed by his vice-skip Kelly Schafer, second Chris Haichert and lead Teejay Haichert. Despite their relative lack of experience in mixed curling at the international level, the foursome will likely be strong contenders for the title due to their outings at the national level in Canada – the top ranked nation in mixed world rankings.
Although not high on the rankings, Kenya and Nigeria will also hope to put Africa on the curling map by putting up a good show in World Mixed Curling Championship 2024. Kenya’s rink will be skipped by Daniel Odhiambo, while Harold Woods III will serve as skip for Nigeria.
