World Record: Syazrul Idrus takes first 7-fer in T20Is

Syazrul Idrus has etched his name in the history books as he became the first person to take 7-for in T20 Internationals.

Malaysian seamer Syazrul Idrus became the first man to capture seven wickets in a T20I, doing so against China in Kuala Lumpur during the first game of the T20 World Cup Asia B Qualifier. Idrus constantly swung the ball into the hitters, taking all seven wickets.

Idrus completed with the bowling figure of 4-1-8-7, the best in all of T20 cricket. Colin Ackermann held the previous record, going 7 for 18 for Leicestershire against Birmingham Bears in the 2019 Vitality Blast.

Idrus broke Peter Aho’s T20 international record. In 2021, Aho had 6 for 5 against Sierra Leone while playing for Nigeria. Deepak Chahar of India holds the record among full member nations, with his 6 for 7 against Bangladesh in 2019 ranking joint-third overall with Dinesh Nakrani of Uganda, who recorded the same numbers against Lesotho in 2021.

China vs Malaysia

After winning the toss and electing to bat, China had reached 12 for no loss in four overs when Idrus took his first wicket. Idrus was brought in as the first bowling change and struck with the first ball of his second over, dismissing Wang Liuyang for three runs. He went on to take three more wickets in the over. He took another wicket in his third over.

Idrus’ final over, a maiden, resulted in two more wickets, leaving China at 20 for 9 after nine overs. A few moments later, Vijay Unni dismissed Luo Shilin via lbw to end the innings on 23.

Malaysia, in response, also lost their openers early and were 3 for 2 after two overs. Virandeep Singh, on the other hand, scored 19 off 14 balls with two fours and a six to help his team win in 4.5 overs.

China’s record

China also got their names in an infamous record. Their score of 23 runs on 26th July 2023 meant that they have now recorded the third-lowest total in T20I history. Isle of Man (10) vs Spain in February 2023 and Turkey (21) vs Czech Republic in August 2019 are the two lower scores ahead of China’s 23.

China’s batting woes continued on 27th July as in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Asia B Qualifier match they once again were dismissed for a low score of just 26 runs which is the joint fourth-lowest total.
