The Aussie Mavericks Kites were crowned champions of the World Tennis League 2025 after edging past the AOS Eagles 22-19 in a thrilling final at a packed S.M. Krishna Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday. In fitting fashion, India’s rising star Dhakshineswar Suresh sealed the title with an unreturnable serve, capping four days of high-octane tennis.
Having languished at the bottom of the table after Day 2, the Mavericks staged a remarkable turnaround in the dynamic, every-game-counts format to reach the final. Backed by a capacity crowd that included Kapil Dev and KL Rahul, they rode momentum swings to hand the previously unbeaten Eagles their first loss of the tournament and claim their maiden WTL crown.
Suresh emerged as one of the standout performers of the league. The 6’5”, 25-year-old power server, who trains via the American college system at Wake Forest University, impressed throughout the week, including a headline-grabbing win over Daniil Medvedev. In the final rubber against Sumit Nagal, Suresh held his nerve to win a tense men’s singles set 7-6, sealing the championship.
Earlier, Marta Kostyuk gave the Mavericks a strong start with a 6-4 victory over Shrivalli Bhamidipaty. The Eagles responded when Shrivalli teamed up with Gael Monfils to defeat Kostyuk and Suresh 6-3 in the mixed doubles. However, Nick Kyrgios and Suresh swung the tie back in the Mavericks’ favour with a 6-3 win over Nagal and Monfils in the men’s doubles, setting the stage for Suresh’s decisive singles triumph.
Branded ‘The Greatest Show on Court!’, the World Tennis League’s debut season in India showcased global stars such as Medvedev, Kyrgios, Monfils, Denis Shapovalov, Paula Badosa and Elina Svitolina, while also shining a spotlight on Indian talent including Suresh, Shrivalli Bhamidipaty, Sahaja Yamalapalli and Maaya Rajeswaran Revathi. With its fast-paced mixed-team format, WTL delivered both elite competition and an inspiring platform for India’s next generation.
