On Sunday, 14th November at the 2021 WTA Finals – singles event in the group stage Karolína Plíšková came back from one set down to win 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 against Barbora Krejčíková. With this, remain in contention for a spot in the semi-final of the WTA Finals.
But, Plíšková’s qualification for a spot in the final four depends on Anett Kontaveit to defeat Garbiñe Muguruza in the later match.
The WTA Finals is a tournament of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) played annually at the end of the season. Players who are at the top of the WTA Rankings have qualified for the tournament. Meanwhile, the 2021 WTA Finals is held in Zapopan, Mexico from 10th to 17th of November.
The 3rd seed, Karolína Plíšková defeated fellow Czech Barbora Krejčíková, the 2021 Roland-Garros Women’s Singles Champion. Krejčíková seeded 2nd had a comfortable lead but Plíšková, 29, showed an excellent display to win the match.
It was a group stage encounter, played at Estadio Akron de Tenis. The 2-hour and 7-minute encounter ended with a score of 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 in favour of Karolína Plíšková.
Format of 2021 WTA Finals
Meanwhile, Ashleigh Barty is the defending singles champion when the event was last held in 2019. It was not held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Round-Robin format: The tournament is played in a round-robin format with the top 2 players from each group advancing to the semi-finals.
With that, Krejčíková finished the tournament with 0-3 (win-loss) and is out of the tournament. Meanwhile, Plíšková with this win has a 2–1 record in the group stage. However, her qualification to the last four will depend on Anett Kontaveit vs Garbiñe Muguruza encounter.
