The 2020 Thomas & Uber Cup has been amazing so far, with exciting matches played in both the Uber Cup and the Thomas Cup at Aarhus, Denmark from 9 to 17th October 2021. With the final day witnessing the 2020 Thomas Cup Final between Indonesia vs China.

Meanwhile, this was the 31st Edition of the Thomas Cup. Indonesia is the most successful team in the tournament with 13 Titles. China were the defending champions

However, Indonesia had last won the Thomas Cup in 2002. Since then, China has been dominating the tournament and are behind Indonesia with 10 Titles.

The 2020 Thomas Cup Final – Indonesia vs China, was played at the Ceres Arena in Aarhus, Denmark on Sunday, October 17, 2021.

Journey to the 2020 Thomas Cup Final

Both Indonesia and China finished  top of their respective groups – Group A and Group C with 3 Wins. Meanwhile, In the Quarter-finals – Indonesia defeated Malaysia 3-0. China won 3-0 against Thailand.

Whereas in the Semi-finals, Indonesia won 3-1 against Denmark & China won 3-1 against Japan.

First Up was the Men’s Singles match, where World No. 5 Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indonesia faced China’s Lu Guangzu, ranked 27th in the world. The match lasted for about 1h 17m as it went into the decider, with Indonesia’s Anthony Sinisuka Ginting winning 18-21, 21-14, 21-16 against Lu Guangzu. With a game down, the Indonesian did well to give his country a lead of 1-0.

Then, next up was the Men’s Doubles tie as – World No. 7 Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto of Indonesia was up against China’s new pair of He Jiting/Zhou Haodong. They were formed during the Sudirman Cup 2021. The Indonesian duo won in two straight games 21-12, 21-19 in about forty-three minutes.

Meanwhile, in the 2nd Men’s Singles match, seventh-ranked Indonesian shuttler Jonatan Christie faced China’s Li Shifeng who is ranked 65th in the world. This match lasted for 1h 22m and went into the decider with Jonatan Christie winning it by a score of 21-14, 18-21, 21-14 against Li Shifeng. Indonesia won the tie 3-0 and became the 2020 champions of the Thomas Cup.

China ended up being the champions of the 2020 Uber Cup Final where they beat the Japanese team but they weren’t able to complete a much desired “double” of the Uber and the Thomas Cup.
