The 2021 Denmark Open is being played from the 19th to the 24th of October 2021 at the Odense Sports Park in Odense, Denmark. The Denmark Open got upgraded to a Level – Super 1000 event this year, as it was originally a Super 750 event.
India had only two players competing at the Quarter-finals stage of the 2021 Denmark Open on Friday, 22nd October. PV Sindhu in the Women’s Singles and Sameer Verma in the Men’s Singles event.
PV Sindhu & Sameer Verma crashed out of the 2021 Denmark Open, with a defeat in the Quarter-finals
This was PV Sindhu’s first tournament after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where she won a bronze medal. The Indian star player is a two-time Olympic medalist – she earlier won a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Sindhu had earlier missed out on team competitions such as the 2021 Sudirman Cup & the 2020 Thomas & Uber Cup as she requested the Badminton Association of India (BAI), to not include her in the squad citing recovery post Olympics.
Women’s Singles QF – PV Sindhu vs An Se-young
It was a disappointing result for India’s PV Sindhu, who is seeded 4th in this tournament against the 5th seeded An Se-young of South Korea
The head-to-head results favoured the 19-year-old Korean as they have met only one time before at the 2019 Denmark Open and the result went Se-young’s way.
It ended in a similar fashion at the 2021 Denmark Open QF again as the Korean youngster won in two straight games 21-11, 21-12 in about thirty-six minutes.
The Korean shuttler dominated from the 1st game itself, where she had an 11-4 lead in the mid-game interval.

Men’s Singles QF – Sameer Verma vs Tommy Sugiarto
Meanwhile, Sameer Verma had retired from the match after being one game down against the Indonesian player Tommy Sugiarto, which the latter won 21-17, as the second game was not played.
Both India’s Sameer Verma and Tommy Sugiarto are unseeded in the 2021 Denmark Open.
As a result, India’s campaign at the Denmark Open 2021 came to an end with PV Sindhu losing against An Se-young and Sameer Verma retiring from his match against Tommy Sugiarto.
