2024 NBA Cup: Format, Groups, Key Dates

The NBA Cup is back after a successful debut in the 2023-24 season. The NBA’s annual in-season competition returns next week starting November 12, providing all 30 teams in the league with an opportunity to chase another championship and collect a portion of a lucrative prize pool.

The 2024 NBA Cup is a multi-stage basketball tournament that will be played during the 2024–25 NBA season.

NBA Cup Format

The NBA Cup consists of two stages: group play and knockout rounds.

Group Play

All 30 teams have been randomly drawn into six groups of five teams each in 2024 NBA Cup. Each group containing teams from the same conference (i.e. Western or Eastern).

Each team will play one game against each opponent in its group in a round-robin format, with two games at home and two on the road.

West Group A

  • Minnesota Timberwolves
  • LA Clippers
  • Sacramento Kings
  • Houston Rockets
  • Portland Trail Blazers

West Group B

  • Oklahoma City Thunder
  • Phoenix Suns
  • Los Angeles Lakers
  • Utah Jazz
  • San Antonio Spurs

West Group C

  • Denver Nuggets
  • Dallas Mavericks
  • New Orleans Pelicans
  • Golden State Warriors
  • Memphis Grizzlies

Eastern Conference

East Group A

  • New York Knicks
  • Orlando Magic
  • Philadelphia 76ers
  • Brooklyn Nets
  • Charlotte Hornets

East Group B

  • Milwaukee Bucks
  • Indiana Pacers
  • Miami Heat
  • Toronto Raptors
  • Detroit Pistons

East Group C

  • Boston Celtics
  • Cleveland Cavaliers
  • Chicago Bulls
  • Atlanta Hawks
  • Washington Wizards

If two or more teams in a group have equal records upon completion of group play, the following tiebreakers are applied in this order:

  1. Head-to-head record in the group stage
  2. Point differential in the group stage (excluding overtime)
  3. Total points scored in the group stage (excluding overtime)
  4. Regular season record from the 2023–24 regular season
  5. Random drawing

Knockout Rounds

Eight teams will progress to the knockout stage from group play: six group winners and two “wild cards”. The wild cards will be one team from each conference with the best runner-up record of any group.

The knockout rounds which consist of quarter-finals, semi-finals, and championship will have single-elimination games.

All games in the knockout round, except for the championship game, will be factored in for the regular season standings.

2024 NBA Cup: Key Dates

The 2024 NBA Cup starts with group play on Tuesday, 12 November, with the final group games slated for Tuesday, 3 December.

The quarter-finals will be staged on Tuesday, 10 December and Wednesday, 11 December.

The semi-finals and championship will be held in Las Vegas on 14 December and 17 December, respectively

2024 NBA Cup: Prize Money

Players of the champion team will take home $500,000 each while that of the runner-up team will be rewarded $200,000 each. Players losing the semifinals will walk away with $100,000 each, whereas those exiting in the quarterfinals will earn $50,000 each. 

2024 NBA Cup: How To Watch Live

Viewers in the USA can watch NBA Cup games on national channels including ABC, ESPN, NBA TV, and TNT. International audiences can catch all the action via NBA League Pass.
