Ravichandran Ashwin, one of India’s greatest modern-day spinners, shocked fans by announcing his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL) on August 28. However, the 38-year-old made it clear that he is not done with franchise cricket. Since then, he has been linked with several overseas leagues, and the Big Bash League (BBL) in Australia looks like a real possibility.

According to reports, Cricket Australia has already opened discussions with Ashwin for the 2025-26 season, which starts on December 14. Having him in the BBL would be a huge boost for the league, as Ashwin’s experience, skills, and reputation would add star power and tactical depth.

Here are three teams that might target Ravichandran Ashwin if he joins the BBL this season.

1. Melbourne Renegades

Melbourne Renegades

The Melbourne Renegades could benefit the most from signing Ashwin. Their home ground, Docklands Stadium, is known for assisting spinners and producing low-scoring games. Adding Ashwin to the squad would give them a major edge on such pitches.

They already have Adam Zampa leading their spin attack. Pairing Zampa with Ashwin would create one of the most dangerous spin duos in the league. The Renegades also have Jason Behrendorff in their pace department, meaning the balance of spin and pace could make them a much stronger side compared to last year’s sixth-place finish.

2. Melbourne Stars

The Melbourne Stars have often struggled to build a reliable spin unit. They mostly rely on their fast bowlers, but at the MCG, the large boundaries can make quality spinners very effective. Ashwin’s variations, experience, and ability to bowl at different stages of the innings would solve this long-standing issue for the Stars.

They have already signed Mitchell Swepson, which shows they are looking to strengthen their spin options. If Ashwin joins, he would not only bring wicket-taking ability but also provide leadership alongside big names like Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis. His presence would also help mentor the younger bowlers in the squad.

3. Adelaide Strikers

Adelaide Strikers Squad - BBL

The Adelaide Strikers endured a tough 2024-25 season, finishing bottom of the table. Lloyd Pope showed promise with 15 wickets, but he lacked strong support from the other spinners. This is where Ashwin could fit in perfectly.

Ashwin has played more than 300 T20 matches and taken over 300 wickets. His ability to bowl in the powerplay, middle overs, or even at the death makes him a complete package. He can also contribute handy runs with the bat, giving the Strikers extra depth in their lineup.

With pacers like Luke Wood, Hasan Ali, and Jamie Overton already in the squad, Ashwin’s inclusion could balance the attack and help the team bounce back from last season’s struggles.
