The top 10 FIDE rankings were released earlier this week, and the list is significant for breaking many records and barriers. For the first time in history, three Indian chess players have achieved a ranking within the top 10 of the FIDE rankings.
Gukesh D created history by winning the World Chess Championship last year, making him the youngest World Chess Champion. His recent performance at the Tata Steel Masters, where he finished as the runner-up, also contributed to his rise in the Top 10 FIDE rankings, where he is placed in the third position. Arjun Erigiasi sits just below him at the fourth position with a rating of 2782. His significant rise in the ratings is due to the Chess Olympiads and other tournaments like the German League.
The young Indian chess talent Praggnanandhaa R. also made his comeback to the top 10 FIDE rankings as he was placed at the seventh position, highlighting his dominance in the sport. His recent win at the Tata Steel Masters 2025 marked a historic milestone in Indian chess history as he became the first Indain to win the prestigious tournament since Viswanathan Anand in 2006. He also recently won the Prague Masters by defeating Thai Dai Van, which further elevated his ranking.
Not just in the top 10, Indians are also shining bright beyond that, as Aravindh Chithambaram made significant strides and rose to World Number 11 after his exceptional performance in the Prague Chess Festival 2025. The all-time chess legend Viswanathan Anand also marked his presence in the list and was placed in the 15th position.
