4 Forgotten Athletes Who Made History: The world of sports is fast-paced, and even the best of the athletes who have made history end up getting forgotten over time. Though their achievements quietly whisper through the halls and stadiums that once roared their names, with new and emerging sports talents, they end up fading in the background.

These are 4 Forgotten Athletes who made history but faded from the spotlight:

Bob Beamon

Sport – Long Jump

Country – USA

Bob Beamon broke the existing world record in the long jump by 55 cm when he leaped 8.90 meters in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.

His record stood unbroken for 23 years. However, regardless of this unbelievable record, which is referred to as the ‘Leap of the Century’, he faded from the public eye soon after.

He remained present in sports development, but his name does not come up in conversations.

Derartu Tulu

Sport – Long Distance Running

Country – Ethiopia

In the Barcelona Olympics, 1992, Derartu Tulu became the first Black African Woman to win an Olympic Gold.

She attained the first position in Long Distance Running (10,000 meters).

Hers was not just a personal victory, but a victory for all African women in sports.

However, despite this milestone, her victory is not seen as celebrated globally, except in Ethiopia.

Laszlo Papp

Sport – Boxing

Country – Hungary

He was the first boxer to win consecutive Olympic gold medals.

He won three times, first in 1948 and then in 1952 and 1956.

His victory, too, remains under-recognized when names of boxing legends are brought up, despite the fact that he remained undefeated in his professional career.

Fanny Blankers-Koem

Sport – Track & Field

Country – Netherlands

Fanny Blankers Koem won 4 Gold Medals at the London Olympics in 1948 in Track and Field.

She won these medals after having children and ended up opening doors for many female athletes who came after her.

However, she also remains a forgotten athlete whose name is rarely mentioned when stories of athletic excellence are being mentioned.

These athletes have made a great impact through their journeys, talent, and perseverance, and should be celebrated for their achievements, though they might have stepped out of the spotlight early on.
