Transgender Athletes Who Are Paving The Way: Transgender athletes have been paving the way in various sports through their athletic achievements. They have been challenging the policies, norms, and rules that govern the world of sports and are sparking conversations that are important for access to equal opportunity in competitive sports.
Lia Thomas
Sport- Swimming
- Lia Thomas won the NCCA Division I Championship in the women’s 500-yard freestyle and became the first openly transgender athlete to have done so in 2022.
- She transitioned after hormonal replacement therapy in 2019. Before this, she had previously competed in the Penn’s men’s swim team.

Caitlyn Jenner
Sport- Track and Field (Decathlon)
- Caitlyn Jenner is one of the most popular former athletes to have transitioned in the public eye.
- She was originally Bruce Jenner and at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, won the Olympic gold in decathlon.
- 2015 was the year when Caitlyn Jenner publicly came out as a transgender woman.

Junior AB Hernandez
Sport- Track and Field(Jump Events)
- AB Hernandez is a trans high school athlete, and she competed in the girls’ track and field championship under a rule that had been newly adopted by the governing body of Sports California High School.
- Recently, in 2025, in the girls’ high jump and triple jump, she won gold.
- With AB Hernandez’s participation, a dialogue has started about inclusion, fairness, and the application of rules in youth sports.

Dr. Renee Richards
Sport- Tennis
- In 1975, Rennee Richards had a gender-affirming surgery.
- She had to go through a legal battle so that she could participate in the U.S. Open, where she had sued the U.S Tennis Association (USTA) and ended up reaching the doubles final.
- She became one of the first transgender women to professionally compete in sports in 1970’s.
- After her retirement, she became an eye surgeon and advocated for trans rights in sports.
- She is considered one of the pioneers to advocate for transgender rights in global sports.

There are many other transgender athletes who have been key in initiating a dialogue about inclusivity in sports with respect to trans-rights, but these 4 transgender athletes have in their own way and their own field of sport, managed to challenge the norms and laws for one goal – inclusivity in competition.
