Natalie is one of the few athletes who have competed in both the Paralympics and the Olympics.

She made history in 2008, when she swam 10km in an open water race in the Olympic Games.

Melisa Stockwell

Sports: Swimmer 

Melisa Stockwell’s leg was amputated in a bomb attack during the American-Afghanistan war. She is a war veteran.

She started to swim as part of her rehabilitation, and after four years of the tragedy, in 2008, she competed in the Beijing Paralympic Games.

She now appears as a guest speaker, motivating people with one simple message of not letting physical disabilities get in the way of their path to success.

Alana Nichols

Sports: Multisports, Wheelchair basketball, Skiing

She has taken part in three main sports in the Paralympic Games, like wheelchair basketball and Alpine Skiing, and Paracanoe.

Alana was just 17 years old when she had a snowboarding accident, causing a spinal cord injury, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down.

However, she discovered a talent for sports like basketball in her wheelchair.

In 2008, she won a gold medal for wheelchair basketball in the Paralympics.

Jim Abbott

Even though Jim Abbott was born without his right hand, his disability only pushed him to work harder.

He became a Major League Baseball legend with the New York Yankees, and he also played for the Chicago White Sox.

He was a professional athlete in times when it was uncommon to see people with disabilities participating and winning in sports.

Jim’s successful baseball career has been nothing short of inspirational for many people.

Bethany Hamilton

Sports: Surfing 

Bethany Hamilton is a professional surfer who lost her arm in a tragic shark attack, but returned to surfing within a month of the incident.

Ever since, she has become one of the most popular figures in the list of disabled athletes who have succeeded in their sport and have inspired generations with their unwavering determination and passion towards the sport.

These athletes are all driven by their determination to push beyond anything that limits them and to overcome all challenges so that they can be recognized for their incredible performance on the ground and not their disabilities as the focus point.
