7 Killed In Stampede After RCB’s IPL Win: Sadly, things went wrong in Bengaluru after the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
During the celebrations in the city on Wednesday afternoon, a stampede broke out, leading to the deaths of around seven people and injuring more than 25 others.
Under Rajat Patidar’s leadership, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won their first-ever IPL title on June 3 at the Narendra Modi Stadium by defeating Punjab Kings by 6 runs. RCB scored 190/9 and restricted Punjab Kings to 184/7.
To celebrate the historic win, RCB announced a victory parade and other events in Bengaluru. On Wednesday, they received a grand welcome, with fans crowding the streets. The team met Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar at the airport and then visited CM Siddaramaiah at Vidhana Soudha before heading to the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Sadly, the celebrations turned tragic when a stampede broke out outside the stadium. Police couldn’t control the crowd, leading to the deaths of seven people and injuries to over 25 others, including six in critical condition.
After the win over Punjab Kings, RCB fast bowler Josh Hazlewood said the victory meant a lot to Virat Kohli, who has been part of the team for 18 years. Hazlewood praised the team’s all-round effort and spoke about the emotional value of the win for Kohli. He said:
“Yeah, I think 190 was a very good score. I think the wicket was a little bit up and down. I know it got better as the night went on. But I think our guys brought it out in the back really well to close that score. Everyone just chipped in. And the bowlers held their nerves. So, yeah, great result.”
“Yeah, it probably means everything [to Virat Kohli]. You know, a few of us come and go in franchises. But to me, they’re there from the start.”
“And to slug it out for 18 seasons and to get the result tonight, I think you’ll see a bit of emotion, yeah. Yeah, absolutely [on coming back after the IPL interruption]. You only get better playing in situations like this, gaining that experience. It only adds so many things to your body. So, very happy I came back. I feel fine. These franchises have been for a number of years. Yeah, it’s awesome.”
