Mumbai Indians Suffer at the Bat in WPL 2025

Asking Mumbai Indians to bat first, the Indians began to flourish but eventually unraveled as DC bowlers tightened the noose. Although there were early boundaries, MI’s openers were unable to convert their starts into meaningful contributions. Jess Jonassen and Minnu Mani provided knockout blows to the MI middle order with three wickets each.
Although MI’s top five batters all reached double digits, none managed to go beyond 22 runs, leaving MI in a precarious position. Toward the end of their innings, Amanjot Kaur’s quick-fire 17 off 10 balls helped them finish with a sub-par total of 123 for 9.
DC vs MI WPL 2025: DC’s Bowlers Apply the Breaks Early

MI was off to a quick start, with openers Yastika Bhatia and Hayley Matthews making the most of the early overs. Both of them hit Marizanne Kapp for a boundary off the first ball they received.
When Jonassen entered the fray in the fourth over, Matthews hit her for two successive fours. But DC’s bowlers soon got the game back under control. Shikha Pandey in the sixth over bowled a smart delivery around the wicket, removing Bhatia for 11 as she was caught behind.
The breakthrough was followed by Annabel Sutherland sending back Matthews, who mistimed a shot to Shafali Verma at mid-off. MI was 49 for 2 in nine overs, and DC had started putting pressure. Harmanpreet Kaur was dropped at 1 when Titas Sadhu’s ball flew between the keeper and slip, but MI was yet to find partnerships.
Jonassen and Mani’s Tight Bowling Spins the Game in DC’s Favor

In DC’s last match, Jonassen had been awarded for her contribution with the bat. But today she proved herself with the ball, producing a fine spell. Harmanpreet, settling in at the crease, started to gain momentum. In the 10th over, she hit a delivery from Sadhu for a 79-meter six. But Jonassen wasn’t long in stopping her, getting Harmanpreet out for 22 with an arm ball that got her lbw.
While MI’s batting order struggled, Jonassen continued to tighten the screws. She sent away the potent Nat Sciver-Brunt, who had played well in the tournament so far, and G Kamalini to register first-rate bowling figures of 3 for 25. On similar lines, Mani sent away S Sajana and Amelia Kerr in rapid succession. Kerr’s departure was especially an impressive team effort, with Sutherland doing a full-length dive at long-on to effect a sensational catch.
DC Openers’ Quick Start Sets Up Comfortable Chase in DC vs MI

With a required score of only 124 runs, DC’s openers aggressively started the chase, believing that a strong beginning would make the chase easy.
Meg Lanning, who had not been in great form during the season so far, got her groove back in no time. She dispatched Shabnim Ismail for back-to-back boundaries in the opening over of the chase. At the opposite end, Shafali Verma attacked MI bowlers in earnest. MI’s strategy to short-pitched to Shafali failed as she sent the short balls to boundaries, of which a six-over Sciver-Brunt off the fourth over was the pick.
At the end of the powerplay, DC had scored 57 for no loss, and the required run rate appeared much more within reach. Lanning kept going strong, scoring two more fours off Ismail and then repeating the feat against Matthews in the next over.
Lanning Guides DC Home with Unbeaten Half-Century

Even though the field restrictions were removed, DC didn’t take it easy. Shafali played two sixes in the ninth over from Kerr before getting out for 43 off 28 balls, caught at deep midwicket by Amanjot Kaur. But by then, the damage had already been done, and DC was well in charge.
Lanning carried on her fine innings, scoring her second half-century of the season off 40 balls. She stayed not out on 60 off 49 balls, leading DC to the target with ease. Together with Jemimah Rodrigues, who scored a brisk 16, they reached the remaining 39 runs in just 28 balls, helping DC to a comprehensive nine-wicket win.
DC Takes Top Spot in WPL 2025
The victory propelled Delhi Capitals to the WPL 2025 points table summit, thanks to a dominant display by both their bowlers and top-order batsmen. The bowlers’ tight effort kept MI to a sub-par score, while the openers, spearheaded by Shafali and Lanning, made easy work of the pursuit. With this display, DC has established itself as one of the leading teams in the competition.
