Tanveer Sangha was included in Australia’s playing XI for their semi-final match against India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

Steve Smith won the toss and chose to bat. He also announced that, in addition to Sangha, Cooper Connolly would replace the injured Matt Short. India made no changes from their last group-stage game against New Zealand.

Who Is Tanveer Sangha?

Tanveer Sangha was born and raised in Sydney. As a young athlete, he excelled in multiple sports, and his parents encouraged him to pursue a career in volleyball. However, Sangha’s passion was always cricket, and he decided to follow his heart and pursue the sport.

Sangha quickly realized that he lacked the height and speed needed to become a top pace bowler, which led him to focus on leg-spin during his teenage years. He honed his skills by watching video tutorials on YouTube, and within a few years, he was representing Australia at the Under-16 level.

Tanveer Sangha is the fourth player of Indian origin to be selected for Australia, joining the ranks of players like Gurinder Sandhu, Stuart Clark, and Bransby Cooper.

Is Tanveer Indian?

Tanveer’s father, Joga Singh, is from a village near Jalandhar in Punjab, India, and works as a taxi driver in Sydney. Tanveer’s mother, Upjeet Kaur, is from Fiji and works as an accountant in Sydney. Tanveer also has a sister named Simran.

Tanveer Sangha’s Cricket Journey and Record

Tanveer has played three ODIs and seven T20Is, taking two wickets in ODIs and 10 in T20Is.

He began representing Australia’s U16 team in 2018 and led New South Wales Metro to victory in the U17 National Championships. His performances earned him a spot in the Australian U19 team for their Sri Lanka tour in 2019, and he also received the NSW Cricket Basil Sellers Scholarship.

In 2018, Tanveer joined the Sydney Thunder Development Squad for the Big Bash League and was promoted to the first team in 2019. He impressed at the 2020 U19 World Cup, taking 15 wickets in six matches. At 18, he was awarded a state contract with New South Wales.

Tanveer made his debut for Sydney Thunder in the 2020-2021 BBL season, taking two wickets and finishing as the third-highest wicket-taker with 21 wickets.

In 2021, he was named to Australia’s T20I squad against New Zealand, and he made his first-class debut for New South Wales. In 2023, he debuted in T20Is against South Africa, taking four wickets for 31 runs.
